A quick look at AT shows little on the market and what is there ranges from dogs to people looking for OTT prices. Is rarity beginning to command a higher price?
We are thinking about a cheap run around and I'd love to have another 6 again. 12 months ago you could pick one up for £250 and now...?
I suppose that it depends on the car's condition, how many are left etc etc.
My Rover Metro GTI 16v SPI is mint and is acknowledged to be probably the finest one in existence and as a result commands a very high price. I have turned down large offers because I would much rather have the car than money which would fritter itself away.
the rarer the car gets, the better the remaining ones become, partly because they end up being owned by enthusiasts, or people who have had them a long time.
I think, that at the moment, there are a lot of mugs selling cars - hence the silly prices. They will come back down again, people can't afford to run these cars at the moment.
You say that but enthusiasts like us know that Japanese cars are usually very reliable.
Other cars can cost a fortune to keep on the road once they have done a large mileage.
Richard's Volvo '93 Volvo 940SE Turbo Estate is a case in point after around a quarter of a million miles.
He would have been better off to have sold it 2-3 years ago.
Cars that are unmodified in any way will always fetch a higher price than cars that have been tinkered with.

Having experienced buying and selling these over the last year I think the market is VERY mixed and i've noticed the summer prices are higher than winter thats for sure.
In december, an average early car J/K/L was selling privately for £400 or less, with later cars up to R reg around £800-1000. At one point you could get an R reg for £600ish on Ebay, which is rock bottom.
This continued up until around May, then the prices increased by around 20%
We sold an R reg Auto, in mint condition, 70,000 miles, new cambelt and MOT for £850 and a good condition L reg with full mot for £450, but these prices were cheap compared to the market prices.
MX6's now are at their peak really but as Ben says, this may be due to unrealistic expectations from sellers or people recognising the value for money of the car compared to other coupe's.
Recently i've seen an M reg relisted on ebay twice for £950 ono and on Autotrader theres a mint 1998 car for £1795. Dealer prices are alway unrealistic, as i've seen some sellers asking £2250 or more for an average car and theres an R reg on Autotrader for £1295 thats been there 3 months (low miles so not sure why its not sold)
I think once the nights draw in you will see prices fall again. The shows are drawing to a close and fuel prices are going up. The car IS getting rarer, but its never been a recognised car. Its as rare as a Corrado, but doesnt have the following they do, its the same with the Mr2. If a motoring programme put the word out then you would see a higher demand but at the moment the car seems to be a word of mouth kind of thing.
All the MX6 needs is recognition/publicity, I would think then prices will soar, especially if someone goes into detail on the J-spec/E-spec variants and their benefits etc.
Its amazing how many petrol heads I meet who dont know the car, and think its some sort of 250bhp monster worth 2 grand. At the rolling road day some of the lads were truly shocked at what mine had cost to put together.
Even when they were new, Mazda did not push the car as much as the MX-5.
Having driven a Corrado, I much prefer the MX-6.
All car prices fall as Autumn sets in sadly but it is never a wise time to sell anyway.
Only the truly mint versions of our car will ever command a high price and they are as rare as hen's teeth.
I agree with you that MX-6's need more publicity. This is something that we should discuss at Trax but no approaching the Top Gear team please, cos I will guarantee that Clarkson would slate it.
The MX-6 is a visually stunning car that had my friend John's godson calling it a Ferrari every time it turned up. IMHO, I think that our car is prettier than this Ferrari. The MX-6 is a true classic and is so similar to the Jaguar XK8 that it looks as if Jag copied it ....
John's 1997 MX-6 1992- 1997 Ferrari 456 1996-2004 Jaguar XK8
Its a bit better, but i'm not a big fan of quoting every time a post is written coz it means everyone has to read it twice or more. If a new member reads the thread they will need to read what I posted twice and some people cant be bothered.
Quoting is only really needed for referencing to another persons comments if needed as otherwise the thread ends up miles long and you read the same thing over and over again. Threads flow better without constant quotes, but sometimes they are necessary.
Theres some forums I go to where posts are constantly quoted with pictures etc to the point where theres only 2 posts per page.
Each night before I go bed I go outside and have my last ciggy of the night and just look at the 6 and admire. Its like a reassuring cozy feeling knowing its there.
I've had my 6 for 9 months now and it still impresses me with it's looks and it's power. Last night I was heading back to the car and when I saw it in the moon light it looked even better!
