The easiest thing to fit off the J-Spec engine to a UK car is the Vaf unit (or one off an mx3 v6) and the ecu. This is like giving yourself a chipped ecu. It is possible to fit either ecu (manual or auto) to a manual uk car but if you are fitting it to an auto you need one from an auto. These are rather rare. They have different VRIS opening stages and the rev limiter is set higher. It also doesnt have any control for the egr valve so this will stay closed. But thats a good thing as you loose power when its working anyway.
So would any ZE ecu be a striaght swap for our DE ecu or are there more things to it? -reprogramming / year restrictions etc?

Actually, that statement is not entirely true , it needs to be removed or edited..

You would most probably LOOSE power through certain areas of the rev range using a ZE ecu on a std uk motor, and i very much doubt you would gain any anywhere through the rev range.

You need to understand that the vris system is not some sort of power bolt on... it simply opens butterflies within the inlet manifold to make the tract longer and shorter, and harmonises the inlet to the engines rpm's. The opening points are determined to give the best overall performance from the design of the inlet manifold, changing these points (i.e. bolting in a ze ecu) will have a detrimental affect to how effective the inlet manifold works and would probably produce flatspots and surges through the rev range as the harmonics and rpms meet and pass.

The ZE inlet design is very different to the std UK one, and so are the vris opening points.

So, a ZE ecu attached to a DE engine running a DE inlet is no good.. bolt a ze inlet onto the de engine, and the ze ecu is good.

These should always be considered a set ... ze ecu, je50 vaf, ze inlet. None of these components will work/gain power alone.

You will now have 2 fuel rails feeding equal pressure fuel 2 the engine

Another point to bear in mind is that on later 6's, the ecu is integral with the immobiliser (or the other way round) and it just doesn't work. I found that out to my cost when I tried to switch to a ZE ecu after my upgrade to a ZE engine.
