hi
my Dad has just bought a 1992 MX6 auto. The car is in alright condition and has 90K on the clock.
hopefully i will be able to get insured on it too
Unfortunately the car does have a few problems
1) The car idles at what seems too low (600rpm). also under heavy acceleration the engine does not pick up straight away. any ideas???
2) The standard alarm does not work. The alarm can be armed via the fob but the full closure system does not operate and the O/S (drivers) door does not lock via the central locking.
3) What are the main faults to look for on these cars? what parts of the engine should i check over to ensure its running sweet (its not at the moment!)
any help would be much appreciated or other advice
Also hoping to get some new wheels and maybe a S/S exhaust in the future
Welcome to the board,
1st car is ticking over fine these cars sit down low on the tickover, check fluid level in gearbox.
2nd full closer hmm one of the other people here should be able to help you out there ( G, John ) maybe door solinoid faulty for the O/S door not locking, and maybe why the full closer is not working.
3rd nothing really just that it gets REGULAR oil changes ie every 4/5,000 miles and only use the best oil in these cars 0/40 Mobil 1 most people use here and only a MAZDA oil filter there cheap even there.
Andy
PS
hope your not to young as your DAD might get a fight when he gets a quote to put you on the policy.
to err is human (now does that mean owing a soarer i have erred )
Idle speed should be 650 +/- 50 RPM, so thats fine.
Hesitant accelleration can be caused by a few things, and could be fuel or ignition based. Firstly, I would look for any codes present. this can be easily done on early cars like yours.. look in the thread marked diagnostic code reading, this will tell you what to look for. If you get any codes, le me know what they are.
Check plugs, run some injector cleaner through, and check for any loose or disconnected pipes.
Alarm wise, depends on what type is fitted.. you will need to trace the fault.. possibly starting in the drivers door... use the key in the passenger door, and the drivers door should lock... if not, maybe a faulty motor.
As for keeping it running sweet........ change the oil and filter regularly (3000 miles if poss, never more than 6K) and only ever use a genuine Mazda filter... thats about it...
Lack of oil changes will kill it... first signs are tapping from the HLA's (hydraulic tappets) if you get this, use an engine flush, and change the oil and filter.. usually works.
Happy motoring !

yeah ask Rich about lack of oil changes!!! Actually ask him about a lack of oil!!! Its expensive!!!
Our engines arent exactly cheap even second hand. Treat them right though and ive heard stories of them doing 200k and beyond still going as well as the day it came out of the workshop.

Third party the way you drive , now i would never have this car on a 3rd party to be safe, as you know the price of parts , but lets say nath1772 is 18, now i wonder what they will want for him on the policy, if they let him on, would be intresting to know what the result will be, there was someone not that long ago who tried to get there son on the policy and basically couldn't or was silly money.

PS
poor Rich your gonna have that engraved on your headstone m8 .

Thing is I couldnt get fully comp insurance for the first year I had my 6 so I was stuck on thrid party. The good news is it should all be sorted soon.
As for Rich's Headstone I agree. That and wrapping the misses Calibra into a roundabout!!!

thanks for all your replies, i will check the diagnostics and see if i get any codes and let you know.
i haven't enquired about the insurance yet but i do think i'll be able to do it. i've had quotes for grp16 corrado's and other cars on my farthers policy for around 1200-1500, which considering my age and driving experience is not too bad...
i'll have a good look through the engine following all the advice i've been given in the morning and also check out some insurance quotes out.
Treat them right though and ive heard stories of them doing 200k and beyond still going as well as the day it came out of the workshop.
There's actually a 626GT 2.5 with over 450K on the clock, with nothing more than a faulty alternator at 200k..
one was stripped down at 300k and was tested as to wear..
Quote:
"After 300,950 miles the Mazda MX6-V6 passed an IM 240 Exhaust Emission Test in Aurora, Colorado, with results well within new car limits. At more than 310,000 miles, the test engine was disassembled for inspection and measurement. No wear was evident on valve stems and guides, main and rod bearings, crankshaft main and rod journals, or cylinder walls. The cylinder hone marks from original factory machining were all clearly evident. While piston skirts showed no wear, piston rings showed an average of only 0.0015" of face wear."
As for the Oil change.... not intended to poke at anyone.... I had even forgot about Rich.... until he put his foot in it..
Cheers for that !
