I was wondering, as I don't have access to any literature from the time, what cars the MX6 was in direct compitition with back in 1993/94. I know it was a £20k car then which, I assume, put it in good company.
Also, why is it considered "underestimated" at the time? Was it launched quietly, lacked marketing or just not liked by the press of the day?
I ask this as I've driven many cars and not many put a smile on your face like a 6 does.

From what I remember My dad had one as a company car and he spoke to several dealers prior to getting it and they said that they had limited numbers each year (something like 3 or 4) which they could have sold 3 or 4 times that number.
I dont remember any big add campagns at all. The only reason my dad went to look at it is it was the only coupe he could have with cruise control as standard although when he got his it had been removed and replaced with air bags!!!
We went from a 2.0 16v Calibre to the MX and it was a far better car.

Most of the above had a choice of engines ( or got changed during there lifespan ) So the customer could chose what they wanted - the MX6 was a straight out 2.5 V6 coupe no choice. It wasnt blistering performance given its engine size so wasnt raved about for its performance - its looks were pleaseing so it wasnt critised for that either. Basically it was just another nice car and because of the low numbers sold ( 4800 ish in the UK ) then people soon forgot about it.
Just think yourself lucky you found one - id never heard of one until i search for coupe on autotrader and have owned one ever since ! probably to the best buy car ill ever find .....
"After 300,950 miles the Mazda MX6-V6 passed an IM 240 Exhaust Emission Test in Aurora, Colorado, with results well within new car limits. At more than 310,000 miles, the test engine was disassembled for inspection and measurement. No wear was evident on valve stems and guides, main and rod bearings, crankshaft main and rod journals, or cylinder walls. The cylinder hone marks from original factory machining were all clearly evident. While piston skirts showed no wear, piston rings showed an average of only 0.0015" of face wear."
After buying my 6 I found the original accessories brochure in the seat pocket.
This features a red 6 and a rather cheesy couple, sort of thirtysomethings, blazers with brass buttons etc., "sailing round the Solent or skiing in Switzerland". No towbar for the boat (altho it looks like there should be from the photo) but there is a roof rack for the sailboard and one for the skis!
I can list all the accessories if anyones interested....
I get the feeling everyone thinks ive got a lead right foot. Its not true i tell you... well may be sometimes. As ive said before. Id had that engine for over 2 years and covered over 60k on it. To add to that it had a new set of heads, cams and a sparkly new cambelt about 6k before she blew. I have my suspecions that the new heads, cams ecu and everything else was just a little too much for the old girl. Oh well.

The work was done by Cruise and his "boys". Commonly know as bodge it and scarper ....
I mean that poor car had more parts than frankenstien !
( Im not dissing your work Kyle - ultimate respect for doing what you do - i couldnt do it ! - However i dont think it should be used as a bench mark for Mazda engineering ;-) )
It's funny that I've always tried to keep my cars as standard as possible.
My first car was a battered Mini 850 and I could have gone with lots of after-market stuuf but I hunted high and low to find original parts. It was still a bit tatty but that didn't really matter once a Renault Fuego decided to sit in the boot one morning.
I put the Scorpion box on the 6 as as much as it worked out more economic than anything else did and had the benefit of sounding and looking good. New leads are going to go on and maybe, just maybe a CAI.
I suppose it helps with re-sale as well if the cars are standard.

What ever do you mean??? Come on you saw the hybrid. Alot better put together than my first 6 you must admit but then again I didnt have to bodge things as I had a really good idea about what I was doing and didnt need to make half the wiring loom again from scratch.
Yes the engine was tuned but I dont think it was over the top. What you fail to forget is that bodge it and scarper both work in garages and could be working on your car one day.
My question is how many ppl on this forum would attempt what I have???

Hehehehe kyle i would not no where to start with an engine rebuild! i would say not one other person on the site would consider it (exept Einstien with his manuals) he could rebuild one as he prob has step by step instructions
Id be proud to build an engine even if it did give way after a while at least you put the effort in and had something to show for it and you were proud of! Hope all goes well in the re build mate! Let everyone remember you nearly hit the 6s at trax down the strip so it wernt that bad job kyle mate
