Unhappy Request for advice on MX6 ignition problem

I have had a minor ignition related problem on my MX6 for over a year now and would welcome some advice or pointers on how to resolve it. Most of the time I am not aware that anything is wrong, however while the engine is idling in Neutral the tickover is ever so slightly irregular and this is more noticeable when Drive is selected.

The problem can become a real issue on damp or misty days, especially if the car has been left out overnight. Starting the car can be difficult and the car seems not to be running on all cylinders. When the car is driven and warms up then the problem disappears after 5-10 minutes.

In order to try and resolve the problem I have replaced the spark plugs and HT leads but it has not cured it. While changing the leads, I also noticed a small amount of oil in the spark plug well of the right hand cylinder at the back – I cleaned this up but don’t think it is the cause of the problem.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems or can you offer any advice? I had wondered if somehow dampness is able to get into the electrical system but I don’t know where to start looking.

Many thanks,

Steve

Id agree with Neilson - If youve changed the leads ( typically fail at 60-80K ) then the dizzy cap is the next best suspect. On the plus side at least its a cheap part
