Well, what are you lot like, Eh? Such a fantastic response from everyone. Thanks to all of you.
To let you know the latest: I ended up with 17 engine quotes (most of which seem to be based around the Manchester area - have you been knocking off the competition Dave? ) They ranged from £450 + £50 delivery +vat for a 40-45,000 mile J-SPEC unit from Parts-R-Us which apparently included the manifolds etc, a UK spec 43,000 mile one for £480 +vat delivered, through various other reasonable quotes of around £500 to £650 delivered (soak and compression tested) from a yard literally 1 mile away! Oh, and there was one no-hoper asking £895 +vat for a 45,000 mile standard engine. So it would seem that getting an engine for a reasonable price isn't too hard. (If anyone wants numbers for the J-SPEC engines, PM me quick.) As to fitting: A local garage that my brother has a lot of work done at didn't know how much the job would cost so looked it up in "the book" (Andy, you'd probably know about that). "The Book" reckons the job labour alone is £1300!!! Even the owner couldn't believe it. Apparently, it's one of the most complicated swaps a garage can do. (?) For reference, I asked Magna Mazda for a price - £550 +vat. BUT, as they usually do, the guy said that they couldn't guarantee that price as they didn't know the state of the replacement engine, blah, blah, blah. Obviously it didn't include replacement belts (needed in all swaps just in case), water pump, clutch if needed, any other parts/problems found etc, etc. "The overall price could easily get up to about £900 or more plus vat Sir." So: I've got a couple of people at work who say they know someone who could do the job (I bet you've all got those too) and will get back to me next week. I've also got a chap up the road who I've known since childhood (watch it) who runs his own repair place out of a large house left to him that I'll have a chat with. I know for a fact that he had a non-runner MX6 there not long ago so he may be up to the job. Next, my brother is looking at the car in the daylight with me tomorrow to see the extent of the damage. Although he's not a mechanic (he's a Uni Lecturer) he has done a lot of work on past cars (Jags, Manta's, Calibra's etc) and is well in with the original garage. Their latest idea is to see if the engine is indeed beyond repair, if not they may look at repairing it in situ. Personally, I reckon it would be easier for them to swap it, and have printed out some "how to"s for them to look at. I'll also take a good look in Haynes to see what's involved. Lastly, there's you guys and your idea of doing it at Japfest. While I thank you sincerely for the thought, I don't think you've thought it through as there's too much that could go wrong. For example, it only takes one missing or wrong fitting part and we've got a car stuck at Castle Combe that needs trailering back again. And in case you've forgotten, you're going there to see Japfest, not to wrestle all day with an engine swap. Go and enjoy - if I get the car on the road in time I'll see you there - and that's an order! (All together now - "Yes Sarn't Major"... )Thanks everyone for the kind words and big, big gestures. It's really appreciated. I knew this place was the best club going, but never realised just how good. I'll keep you up to date with what's happening (and maybe a cry for help too). All the best, Ken PS, If anyone is up to the job (and has done it before) and fancies some £££ and a weekends lodgings PM me now before I find someone else. ![]() |

Ken
haven't done an engine swap on a 6 before but to be honest engine swaps aren't to hard, they either lift up the way with the box attached or they go down the way,<< downwards is always better done on a pit. And if I was nearer, and chris hard some more time off then i would be more than glad to come down and sort it out for you,but alas i am up here in Sunny Scotland so i'm affraid that it might be down to some of the other people here to lend a hand .I think the raffle has went to the point of non stopable now ,and the money made can go a little way to help out with maybe even the labour costs, blah we wouldn't want you braking into your pension money anyway LOL.Andy |

These is light at the end of the tunnel..
I have been speaking to Ken and also managed to get hold of Kyle.. AKA Cruisemad.. Kyle has gratiously offered to go down and fit a new engine for Ken, so it could be all roses, and we should hopefully see them both at Japfest. ![]() John |

As usuall im about 3 days late.
To cut a long story short ive had loads of bad luck in the last 6-7 months and i quit/lost my job at xmas. I work for the local pub and ive put my 6 back on the road for less than 100 quid including the new engine but we wont say much on that. Ive spoken to John and to Ken and have offered to rescue ken if he can get an engine in time and i can get down there. Also I will be comming to jap fest in the 6 which now has another hybrid engine. Anyway i know im not on the forum much but if ppl are desperate to speak to me john has the means. Lets hope we can get kens motor back on the road before japfest. Kyle |

Well, you've already heard the news I see.
![]() Yep, Kyle has very kindly agreed to come down to sunny Dorset for a 'short break' to engineer the motor change. He's even bringing his own hoist! Kyle you're a real star. Now all I've got to do is decide which engine to get. My heart says go for the £500 J-Spec (including manifolds apparently) but it wouldn't come with J-Spec ECU or VAF. Shame to fit the lump and not have it running. (But then again, it has a 4 month warranty...) So it looks like my head wins, and I go for a standard UK engine so I can rob bits from the existing one if needed. I've just got to check warranties, but am looking at around the same money as the J-Spec. My brother and I have jacked the car already and looked underneath. There's no sign of outer damage apart from oil everywhere from the filter back. I pulled the sump drain plug to see how much oil was left and was horrified to find a pint or two of coolant came out first, followed by about a gallon of oil. I've already taken the shiny bits off, and am going to spend tomorrow removing as much as possible to prep the engine for the lift. Thanks again everyone for all the support, especially John, Kyle and Roland. I'll start a new thread now about the job itself... ![]() Cheers, A much more optimistic... Ken |
