weak bottom end?

I was speaking to a mate of mine saturday(he's a mechanic) He said that the bottom end of the mx6 is very weak and they tend to blow up.Is this right or do you reckon he's just jealous?

You got it in one.

Its one of the most reliable Jap engines you can get if maintained.

To be fair and no offence to yer mate, I think this is the best place to ask, I mean just about everyone here has one or has had one, and if they blew up all the time, there probably wouldnt even be an MX6.com??

One experience can sometimes be exaggerated perhaps.

MX-6 engine reliability

The engines in these cars, provided they are maintained correctly and not thrashed, are very robust.

An American oil company ran an MX-6 for 310000 miles in tests and the only wear found afterwards was 15 thou of wear on the piston rings.

In other tests the engine (presumably with some mods) was run on a test bed at engine speeds approaching 9000 rpm for extended periods without failure.

I suspect your mechanic may have dealt with MX-6's which were treated very unreasonably.

regards,

ifc

Its unlikley the mechanic would just make something like that up - Although mechanics do vary greatly . Maybe hes had some bad experiences with them.

In nearly 3 years on the board ive only heard of 3 engine failures, One didnt check his oil ( so it seized ) , One took it way past the rev limit ( you know who you are ), and one was a self build half breed ( much kudos but it did break ).

If you see him next time ask him to quantify his comments

Yes very funny G. J-Specs tend to go bang more than the uk engines. Also alot of mx3 v6's the 1800s go pop a bit but the KL03 engine is very reliable.

To say it has steel rods & crankshaft, I don't think that it's a very robust engine. I've seen quite few for sale on ebay with thrown rods during the 2 years I've owned mine, certainly enough to concern me, especially with Ken's dilemma! Glad your sorted now though Ken.

Russ.

Yes it's an auto, but it makes me smile!

Now you tell me!

Ken

Oh, BTW everyone - I got screwed by MazdaSpares and didn't get an MX3 flywheel. Seems they don't know the difference and sent me another standard one! And they haven't had the courtesy to answer my email either. Bad feedback for them left with 1stchoiceonline...
