I was just having a poke around under the bonnet yesterday to see if I could see anything obviously amiss with my dodgy knock sensor.
It only seems to have 1 slightly chaffed wire going to the little grey connector although the female side of said connector has three wires coming out.
Can someone have a look at theirs and let me know how many wires there should be. Mr Haynes says that there should be two wires, a black and a white (black to earth, white to PCM) but I am bugderigared if I can find a white one.
It is basically a microphone and I suspect of those three wires one is ground, one will be +12V from the battery and one will be the output from the sensor which goes back to the ECU. Your single wire is either three wires twisted together and sheathed or you have two missing.
Try making sure that you have a 12V supply in and that the sensor is reading correctly between AC out and ground (Haynes says 560 ohms). The manual infers you can test the sensor without removing it from the engine.
It's in a lovely place, isn't it? I'll go out and have a look at mine in a while.

When I went to look at mine I found one black and one white wire going back to the ECU. Don't know about the side going down to the knock sensor but it looks like several wires in a sheath.
Would still suggest measuring resistance of knock sensor. Also try measuring it with the engine idling.

The knock sensor has 2 wires, in a braided sheath (3rd wire)
one signal wire (white) one earth wire (black/red stripe) which is connected to the sheath.
description says it should have 2.4V with ignition on, and also 2.4V at idle.
symptom are loss of power, with knocking.. code 05 being registered, and this is for open or short circuit.
hope this helps..

John,
Out of interest if it wasnt connected could that be why an engine seemed to be running flat??? Just realised its not been connected on mine for a while due to a small wiring fault with the connector. Not major as it was fine until i swapped engines. Could this be why its flat???
Please say yes and I will fix it in the morning and try it on the way to work.

Mine has run with a hesitiation since I have had it, since the PCM will retard the timing to take account of a knock which could be there, but that it can't detect.
Gives up a code 5 on the PCM. My cable seems to be chaffed, but I reckon I have enough slack to reterminate. I might have solved it at last!!!! Has only taken me 8 months.
As you can tell, not really used to these space engines, happier with a 2CV or mini engine, not that I have done anything on those for a while either;

You put me to shame. Right. I promise (sort of) to get to it this weekend if I can get a moment free from people coming to view my house. I will be stupidly happy if it is nothing more than wiring.
First of all a big THANKS to all those who have offered me advice on my knock sensor. Finally got round to reterminating the connection this afternoon. What can I say. I did have a code 5 (and a 17 and a 24 but that's another story) and now I don't.
I owe you all a good few beers I think. Nice one. To say I am please would be a gross under-exageration. I had thought that the car was fast before but now it flies!!! No more holes in the mid band of revs. Just pulls hard all the way to the red zone. Cool.
Did I mention that I was a ahppy bunny?
Woooooo and indeed hoooooo. Will propbably be needing a new engine next week now.
