I went there last weekend, so it aint shut. And I saw it in person, but didnt note the interior. In my experience, city dismantlers are a bit expensive.

Ive got a bit of a (long.. sorry!) question that people here might know about....

My mate has an AT telstar with the 2.0 FE engine in it. A while back we stripped it down and rebuilt it.

When we were rebuilding it we discovered the head was beyond repair, so we went to the wreckers and asked for a FE cylinder head. We got one, camshaft and all. We sent this head off to the reconditioners who sent it back and said to use the camshaft that came with it since its suited to the wear in the cam bearings etc... We fitted the head/cam from the wreckers with the CAM PULLEY of the AT head (since the cam pully from the wrecker head was missing). Also we were informed that there was 2 types of cam belt for the FE motors, round and square tooth.

Its been about 8000km since the motor was rebuilt so its bedded in etc. Since then he fitted a full 2 1/4 exhaust and extractors. We noticed that it still felt pretty underpowered so I told my mate he should chuck the original carby out and put a weber 32/36 off an escort on it.

So last weekend we spent quite a few hrs manufacturing an adaptor plate for the 32/36 and put it all together. Changed the jets to suit and used an EGO probe to get the mixtures spot on how the webers like it (AFR 12:1 at full throttle, 13.9:1 cruise).

STILL it was underpowered. It just didnt rev quickly, it VERY slowly made its way from 1500 to 3000, then took off pretty well.

Dont get me wrong, the motor is smooth as silk, doesnt hesitate or missfire, just doesnt throw you back in your seat at all.

I checked the cam timing again, tried the A and B setting (left it back on B) and it made little difference.

Now my question is.... Could that cylinder head we got be off an AR or AS 2.0 FE engine which had a really crap camshaft which made the car 100% underpowered. The reason I ask is that when I look at this cylinder head it has an extra mounting point at the front which does nothing (and the AT cylinder head didnt have it).

Also were the heads any different (geometry, combustion chamber shape etc). Assuming the cams are different can we get an AT cam (or aftermarket one) for it and will it fit?

Thanks for reading guys!

the cams are different??? but no, the head geometry is fine, im leaning towards timing myself, but i you've tried that, however the way it's revving im still gonna say either cam timing or ignition timing itself is retarded... have you chucked a timing light on it??? how much difference would the AT cam make in the AS Turbo do ya reckon, if it's that much better should be quick and simple gain for me???

Ive experimented with quite a few ignition timing settings. At the moment its set to 16 degrees at idle (runs premium and compression isnt raised). Doesnt knock or ping so its happy.

I did think the advance counterweights could be stuffed. When you put the strobe on it with the vac advance off and increase the revs it doesnt seem to advance super far. I also checked the vac advance worked by the usual method.

Whats the chances of the advance counterweights getting stuck though? I havent ever seen that before. Although the distributor was stting for a fair while on a shelf (18 months).

I think i'll try to get hold of one of my other mates with a stock AR/AS/AT and have a look how far that advances when you rev the engine up. Sadly this is looking like a very long process of elimination.

Its funny you say that fetelstar, my step dad has a AT Telstar 2.0 and it used to be really zippy, that was until it had a AR/S Head fitted. Maybe they could be different somehow. Because it did have a super flat spot. Havent driven it lately though maybe fixed.

Best news ive heard all day Exactly the same thing has happend here, car used to be brilliant until it got cooked and we had to rebuild it with the AR/AS head....

I might head to u-pullit and compare an AT to AR/AS head....
