my dads a smoker. has been for 30-odd years so ive always got second-hand smoke since i was a kid.
ive never been a smoker myself tho. kinda turns me off if i see a chick smoking (i think this has already come up btw :P)

i reckon the QUIT ads are quite good. makes u go hmm, that might be me someday but then again maybe not as its only a smallish percentage that gets that kinda stuff. most only get a bad cough etc.

wat about urself chickebabe? do u smoke? of have u smoked?
btw i take it we're not talking about the very occasional one at the pub or a party here.

Yeah it has sort of been touched on as a topic before but the ad was on tv so I figured that if i was a smoker (which Im not) that would seriously make me think about giving up.

The ad is gross...but theres really no point if it doesnt have an effect of the people it needs to .....

Nope not talking about the occasional smoke at the pub....although I think thats where it usually starts ...and i know how easily it could become a more often thing..

A friend of mines Mum had cancer from smoking...was pretty serious and ofcourse scary for the entire family.....she has had alll the treatment ad I thinkpretty much fine now...but still smokes and so do 2 of her children....what more of a wake up call do peopleneed????

Well ... imho it's all personal choice ... and a lot of people enjoy smoking!

If she's already had lung cancer, it's not to say she isn't going to get it again, and it's also not to say if she quits smoking, she'll be better off!

I am one to enjoy a smoke from time to time ... but I only smoke Davidoff Virginia 12s ... which don't have all the chemicals that your supermarket stuff does ... and thus aren't as bad for you (not that they are good for you either).

I'd never buy longbeaches or horizons ... and all those other cheapo ciggies, for the reason that they taste like crap because the tobacco's been tainted with addictive chemicals which increase the effect of nicotine, and thus gets you hooked!

You will also know, if you are a reformed smoker, that it is awfully hard to quit, even if you're not addicted to the nicotine ... as your lungs go through a de-toxification stage where you have about a month of dry coughs ... which can be very painful.

I've been through that stage - and once you're over it ... you say you'll never touch another cigarette for ages, but when you get drunk ... you still get the urge to smoke.

You just have to take into account that cigarettes also have their benefits ... they're a stimulant, they help introverted people gain confidence, they help others relax ... among other things ... some people would just say that the pros outway the cons ... though you could lose your arms, legs, sight and life from doing it.

... and if you think these disgusting campaigns are making a difference ... count how many doctors smoke ... your GP may smoke like a train when you're not looking!!!

I was a fairly full-on adolescent smoker for a couple of years (aaah those were the days when you could by PJ 15s made just for schoolgirls to slip neatly into the pockets of their school dresses!), quit when I was 16. Glad I got it out of the way when I was young.

For me, being the smoker and being around a smoker were always two very different things. These days, I don't really like being around smokers, mainly because I don't like the smell in my hair and smoke always finds the ex-smoker first, and then the non-smoker. I'd rather not be around it, but hey - there's compromise in everything.

There is still something about blowing the smoke yourself that is meditative (despite physiological effects to the contrary). These days I just go stand in cold air when I'm warm and make breath condensation rings All the fun, and only the risk of pneumonia! I like those odds...

Well ... to be compelely honest ... PJ's smell quite bad!

Being a semi-reformed smoker (as in I still have the odd one) ... I can pick up on cheap ciggies and expensive ones now!

Good quality pure tobacco smells really nice ... almost like the smell of hops first thing in the morning (I used to love riding my bike through Leabrook first thing in the morning ... you know, where the old coopers brewery is?)

However, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone!!! ... for the reason that even when you quit ... you still crave ... now can we please change the topic? I'm feel like a smoke now!

Well its interesting to hear some different points of view.

I have smoked at clubs or whatever...and had boyfriends that smoke and its addictive just to be around at times....especially out drinking it would be very easy at times just to have one...

So...change of subject?? Dont wanna be responcible for people taking it up...

Anyone got any unusaul pets??

Well, that was a long time ago, and it wasn't exactly about the smell (and how many kids at that age could afford to be discerning?).

About as unusual as it gets for me is my old pet rat, Biafra (rest her chittering little soul). Other than that, there was just the usual: rabbits, guinea pigs, birds of many colours, shapes and sizes, mice, dogs, cats. These days I tend to stick to cats. I like 'em.

That's what the freezer is for, didn't your mother teach you anything?

(They've just finished passing a law here so that you're not allowed to eat them in South Australia.. so even if I wanted to eat one, which I don't, getting caught would make it the most expensive meal I could think of..)
