2016 MX-5 specs leaked
Sep 11, 2014 - 7:33 PM - by

While the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata has officially debuted, the company has been mum on its specifications. . . until now!

According to a recent report, specs for the 2016 MX-5 Miata have leaked and the next-generation convertible sports car appears to weigh around 2,248 lbs (1,020 kg) which is in the range that the Japanese automaker has claimed. Previously, Mazda boasted that the new MX-5 has lost about 220 lbs (100 kgs) compared to the current model, which commonly weighs around 2,450 lbs depending on the trim. Expect the MX-5 to gain a little weight in U.S. spec however due to safety regulations.

The report also claims that the MX-5 Miata will be powered by a 1.5-liter Skyactiv engine with 128 hp, which is actually 39 hp less than the current model. And despite the weight loss on the new model, it actually gives the new MX-5 a worse power-to-weight ratio. It’s worth mentioning that the leaked specifications come from Australian publication Motoring and these could very well be specs for the Australian market with a more powerful variant heading to the U.S. to appease its consumers.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Revealed and it looks...
Sep 03, 2014 - 8:36 PM - by

The wait is finally over sports car enthusiasts – the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata has made its debut.

The highly anticipated, next-generation sports car was unveiled at a live event in Monterey, California while simultaneous global reveals were also done in Tokyo and Barcelona. Earlier this year, the popular convertible celebrated its 25th anniversary and now the Japanese automaker looks to the future with its new MX-5 Miata, as it continues to strive on as the best-selling two-seat roadster of all time.

During its unveiling, the Japanese automaker described the new MX-5 Miata as a labor of love with its engineers striving to combine the classic roadster with a totally modern design and state-of-the-art technology. Wider and lower than today’s Miata, the new sleek body and design is the Miata’s biggest jump in terms of styling from generation to generation. Inside, the company wanted to give the Miata a much higher quality feel to the interior while remaining driver focused.

The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata adopts both the company’s Skyactiv and Kodo design language and will be rolled out to global markets starting in 2015. Overall, the new Miata is the most compact of any generation MX-5 and is over 220 lbs lighter than the current model.

Unfortunately, the Japanese automaker didn’t reveal the juiciest of details – that is, what’s lurking under the hood and what will be powering the Miata. For now, we’ll have to be satisfied with its stunningly good looks as we wait for Mazda to confirm its powerplant.

MX-5 to Monterey: a 3,000 Mile Journey
Sep 01, 2014 - 8:20 AM - by
by Mike Schlee
At AutoGuide we love road trips. Any chance there is to drive somewhere instead of walk/fly/boat, we take it.
I may be the guiltiest party here. Aside from my yearly adventures with the charity organization Rally North America, I’ll take any opportunity to get behind the wheel and drive.

So, when I got an invitation to attend the world debut of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 in Monterey, California, an evil plan started to form in my head. What if I drove the current generation MX-5 to Monterey to see the unveiling of the new 2016 model? Not only would this be a home coming of sorts for the car, but the weekend following the debut is an event called Miatas at Mazda Raceway, in which MX-5 owners from all over the world are coming for a three-day Miata love-in. Aside from activities on and off the track, there will be a world record attempt on Friday featuring roughly 1,600 Miatas in attendance.

3,000 Miles? No Problem!

I rang up Mazda immediately and laid out my scheme. I was hoping to borrow a 2014 MX-5 to drive out to Monterey. Oh, and did I mention I live on the east coast and the drive would be a 3,000 mile jaunt? For some manufacturers, the idea of driving a tiny roadster to Monterey may border on lunacy. Mazda, however, responded with a “Hell Ya!” (Ok, I may have paraphrased that.)
I’ve already hit the road, leaving Toronto, Canada today on my way to Harrisburgh, PA to pick-up my co-driver for the adventure, Tony Intrieri, Operations Manager of Rally North America.
You can follow the adventure in real-time on twitter, @AutoGuide, or send us a message; we’ll have a lot of time to answer your tweets during the long drive west. As well, we will also be updating our adventure daily, live on using storify like we did during the Under $30,000 Performance Car Shootout and the Mazda Adventure Rally.
While in Monterey, I will also get the chance to drive heritage models of the Miata, partake in the Skip Barber racing school and participate in the MX-5 world record attempt.

2016 Mazda MX-5 to Debut Sept 3rd at Laguna Seca
Jul 03, 2014 - 7:27 AM - by

Mazda will officially introduce the next-generation of its popular MX-5 roadster on September 3rd at one of the world’s most famous racetracks: Laguna Seca.

Officially known as Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the unveiling will come during an annual Miata enthusiast event known as Miatas at Mazda Raceway.

WHAT WE KNOW: 2016 Mazda MX-5

“We’re excited to make this official, to announce that the newest member of the MX-5 Miata family will be arriving soon,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “Along with our colleagues around the world, we continue to celebrate the MX-5′s 25th anniversary and look forward to sharing even more news in the near future.”

Mazda will in fact host several simultaneous global reveals of the car, with debuts also occurring in Japan and Spain.

In March, Mazda revealed the car’s new Skyactiv chassis at the New York Auto Show, announcing that the 2016 MX-5 will be both smaller and lighter than the current model. The car will weigh at least 220 lbs less than the current car.
