What's it worth?

I know, I know, I haven't been on in a long time, but other things in life took priority and my poor little MX-6 has been sitting in storage waiting for the day when she sees the road again.

ANYways.

I *just* found an ad locally for an 89 white 4WS for sale. Now, I know these cars are rare, even more so in Canada and especially on the east coast. The car's had some work done to it, fenders have been replaced but its been sitting for a LONG time (covered in tree crap, looks like a grey car in the pictures).

He wants $1200 for it. On the grounds that is an intercooled turbo. I have yet to say a word to him about 4WS because I just know that if I start getting into that the price will go up. He's even selling it as a parts car! Yes, I know I could swap everything over to my LX but if this one is restorable I'd go that route instead.

I'm trying to work out a trade for a truck I have but if he won't go that route and won't come down on the price... no deal for me.

If the 4WS is not working it will cost a fortune to fix. It is worth talking about. I am pretty sure that he knows that it is one since they have 4WS badges on them. Inspect it thruroughly you may find out why he is selling it for parts. Good luck.

Not really. I have a complete 4ws system as a spare including tank in my garage.

OP, I paid 750 for my 626 4WS Turbo

Good news, everyone!

I managed to work out a deal for this car. If everything goes according to plan, I'm going to pick it up on Saturday.

Here's the pictures from the ad (we had a snowstorm Friday, I had to dig the car out to take a good look at it and didn't snap any pictures):

Text from the ad:

1989 mazda mx6 gt turbo coupe 5 speed standerd, lots of good parts car is all there new fenders, rockers, rad,gas tank, motor is strong, good trans, doors interor is in real good shape just lookin to see what i can get for it. thx ..
only emails please.will trade for a 4 wheeler or ski-doo,all trades considered,send pics of what u got.thk. motor is a 2.2l intercooled turbo...$850
He still has the original fenders, which apparently started to rot at the bottom. The rocker panels come with the car and will have to be installed later. The rockers rotted, predictably, under the plastic trim in front of the rear wheels. Everything is still there in the car, the interior is mint. He has the 4WS centrecaps for it. The only options this car doesn't have are the digital cluster (which I have) and the AAS (which I'm not too worried about).

Now for the important bit:
He told me that the 4WS system never worked since he's owned the car. It started leaking and supposedly the PS line for the rear rack was disconnected. He told me the car was originally from Alberta, and judging by the plate on it it was first registered here in NB in 94-95 (my 95 EGT's plate is only a few numbers off).

Here's hoping the 4WS system is an easy fix!

Yours should have a molded 4ws center horn button. USDM has just the plastic center cap that says 4ws instead of mazda.

I wouldn't pay $1200 for that thing, that's for sure.

The $850 listed seems a bit more reasonable, but even that..... i dunno. Looks like a rust bucket. I bet the underside is scary.

“One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that if you drive into London at 6am, half of the cars on the roads are Porsches and Astons. Whereas if you go in at ten to nine, they’re all Renaults. Simple solution, then. You want a nice car? Get up earlier and do more work.”

The negotiated price wasn't either of those listed, no worries.

I agree on the potential for this to be a rust bucket. Given the condition of the rockers and what else I could see when I checked it over, I don't think the floor is rusted out. The true test will be when I go to pick it up. Its buried in snow pretty much up to the rockers so I couldn't see underneath at all.

Worst case scenario everything gets swapped over to my LX (not that I want to get into that...).

I went back up to the car today to take a better look at it and snap some pictures. I'll be glad when I have this thing back at my parents' place; buddy lives 1.5 hours away from me and out in the middle of nowhere on a terrible road that's beating the crap out of my Tercel.

All four are there! There's even a little tool for removing them.

RSTB and control unit

Interior that's full of crap and a little dirty but otherwise no rips or tears

One of the PS lines is disconnected; is this the one for the rear rack?

And the main reason why the rear steer isn't working currently...

Now I'm hoping it'll just be as easy as re-connecting the line, flushing the rear rack and plugging in the fuse. Tried to start the car this time but there's no gas in it so no go...
