I had time to check this over. After taking off the shift lever on the transmission in the engine bay, I was able to shift it to P by hand......so problem must be with the lever.
Took off the coverings for the shift lever inside the car. Nothing obvious, still not go from R to P. Took off the shift handle, and there was the problem - a piece of plastic had broken off the plastic that gets pushed down to release the shifter - that piece had wedged itself, preventing the shift handle from pushing it down - removed it, and the problem was solved.
The shifter mechanism is pretty straight forward. On the left of it is the cable that moves the shift on the transmission. On the right, there sits material that when pushed up far enough when the shift lever is pushed up, engages and pushes back a round cable - that must be the shift lockout cable.
I see threads about the lockouts with the atm. I don't see this particular issue discussed.
My shifter will not go up into the P position, even with the side knob pushed in. Is that a problem of the shifter, lockout system, or atm ? I have to leave it in N and use the handbrake. All other shifter positions work fine.
