For the Love of Pete, please virus scan..

Well, I have let this go long enough. Someone with the webmaster email address here has the Netsky virus and I have been receiving about 20 virus emails a day for the last month.
It is likely more than one person.

If you dont have a virus scan program install, you can virus scan your computer for free.
Click Here for a free online virus scan

Here is a list of the email servers that have sent me these virus' in order of frequency:
- Roger's Cable
- AT&T Worldnet
- Ripe.net
- X O Communications
- Puerto Rico Telephone Company

If you use any of these ISPs, please run a virus scan. Hell, if you dont have a current virus scan app, please run one.

I don't use any of those ISPs, but I have viruses I don't know how to get rid of. I have used trendmicro to scan before, and it cleaned 3 but said another 3 wern't cleanable. What do I do? One was a worm and the other 2 were troj. I don't know how to get rid of them, so any help would be appriciated. Thanks!!

Not sure if Rogers is Canadian..

Typically what you want to do if an anti-virus cannot clean your computer is to lookup the infomation on the specific virus or trojan.
Quite often there is a specific program avaialble to remove the trojan or specific intructions on how to do so.

The only application that I know of that is decent at removing trojans is Kaspersky AntiVirus. But it is like $80.

Oooo... Im back.

Yall probably dont even remember me..... but for all here who have Viruses, list what they are and Ill tell you how to remove em completely, and keep em from comming back. Im a McAfee Certified anti virus expert..... and so on...

Netsky removal:

The best way to remove the Netsky so far is the STINGER tool. This will remove the more common viruses, and its available free at:

vil.nai.com/vil/stinger

Once you have downloaded it, make sure you go into preferences, and select the SCAN ALL FILES option, and change the recovery option from RESTOR or CLEAN to DELETE.

Once the scan is done and the virus is removed, update Windows. This will prevent it from reinfecting. Then run the Stinger one more time to make sure the Virus was removed.

Removal Instructions for the majority of Backdoor Trojans:

Backdoor viruses tend to protect themselves by registering as Windows resident processes. This will make it impossible to clean or delete the infected file. The only way to do so is to use a scan engine in DOS, or in the case of 2000 and XP in Safe-Mode with command prompt.

Check for Viruses Using Scan
  • Go to http://bin.mcafee.com/molbin/iss-loc.../dailyscan.zip.
  • A File Download box appears. Click OK.
  • Save dailyscan.zip to your Desktop.
  • Once downloaded, close all windows.
  • Right-click dailyscan.zip on your desktop.
  • Click Extract to or double-click the file and click Extract.
  • In the 'Extract to' field, type C:\SCAN
  • Click Extract.
  • Restart the computer.
Windows 95/98
  • Click on the Start button.
  • Select Shut Down from the menu. The Shut Down Windows window will appear.
  • Select Shutdown and click OK. Let the computer shut down completely and turn the computer off at the power switch.
  • Restart the computer, and immediately begin tapping the F8 key every second until the Windows Startup screen appears.
  • Choose 'Command Prompt' from the list, and hit the ENTER key on the keyboard.
  • When the computer if finished booting, the c:\> prompt will appear on the screen.
Windows ME
  • Click on the Start button.
  • Select Shutdown from the menu. The 'Shutdown Windows' window.
  • Select Shutdown and click OK. Let the computer shut down completely and turn the computer off at the power switch.
  • Insert the Windows Millennium Startup Disk and turn on the computer.
  • A Windows Startup menu will appear. Choose 'Command Prompt' from the list, and hit the ENTER key on the keyboard.
  • When the computer is finished booting, the c:\> prompt will appear on the screen.
Windows 2000/XP
  • You can get to a command prompt in Windows 2000 by going into Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
  • If the computer is on: select Start | Shutdown | Restart.
  • If the computer is off, turn it on.
  • When you see the opening splash screen, hold down F8 on the top row of the keyboard or hold down the CTRL key. NOTE: On some computers if you press F8 too soon you'll get a keyboard error if this happens hit the F1 key to continue.
  • The Windows 2000 (or XP) Advanced Options Menu will come up. Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
Scan Instructions
  • Type CD\
  • Press the Enter key
  • At the C:\ prompt, type CD SCAN
  • Press the Enter key.
  • At the C:\SCAN prompt, type SCAN /ADL /CLEAN /ALL /REPORT REPORT.TXT
  • Press the Enter key.
    Note:
The scanner will look at all files on all local drives and attempt to clean the files. An activity report called REPORT.TXT will also be created in the C:\SCAN directory. To view the report in DOS, type REPORT.TXT and press Enter.
  • Once the scan finishes, exit DOS and restart the computer
These instructions will remove 90% of all existing viruses. The are a few strains of virus that have to be removed manually. If any of you have trouble removing one, give me its name and I'll send you specific instructions if I can dig them up.

Do the emails say that YOU tried to send out the virus? I keep getting that and I've scanned my computer with norton's tool twice in safe mode.

Panther,

You are probably fine, there are several email viruses out that come from other people's computers and spoof the destination address as the source. You can look at the email header and find out where it really came from though, and let that person know they have a virus *sigh*

Run linux people, it's pretty much virus free (I think there are 2 known viruses, ever?).

Also AVG..... its free, its not brilliant, but generally not bad considering its free.

Symantec Antivirus is generally highly regarded and used by many companies in OZ too.

Ad Aware is also a great program for removing spyware.

Yeah Rogers is Canadian...

PC-Cillin is by far the best virus scan program that i've ever seen. We use it all the time on the servers at school.
