I bought mine with the equivalent of 85K miles on it. Engine runs like it just came out of the factory. Perfect compression on all 3 faces of each rotor. I drive it nicely, and let it loose every once in a while. I think I'm good for another 2 years before I rebuild it, (which is when I'll do it regardless) Unless I blow it and need a rebuild.

Ok so we have a lot of talk about the first few generations of the rotary. What's so different about the Renesis rotary? I have heard there are some big differences and noticed that although they are still fun to drive, lack some real balls. If Mazda could make the RX-8 10x's more appealing to the masses it would be to add a turbo IMO.

94 Mazda MX6 LS - yep, blew it up again.
93 Ford Probe GT - the $200 DD.
03 Ford Windstar - the ManVan!

Fuel Economy is the reason why it isn't turboed. They wanted to make a reliable, fuel-friendly car that had high HP...which is basically what they did. 232 HP and 165 TRQ...

As for what's different, they moved the intake port to "eliminate" port overlap. It has a higher compression ratio...among other things I don;t care to mention at this hour...I'll be back later with more info on the 13B Renesis.

IMHO Mazda has absolutely NAILED the Rx-8's looks with their R3 model. I would buy one in a fucking heartbeat. I'd probably trade my new 3 and my mx6 for one if it had a turbo or supercharger.

In regards to your fuel economy statement, what kind of mpg does your FD get Joey? I know that the rx8's underpowered renesis motor is still only getting below 20mpg.

I've driven the R3, and I'll be completely honest, I was disappointed. Even my last 6 was faster. Looks are AWESOME, Performance is sloppy.

As far as my car is concerned, if I'm careful, I get maybe 12-13 MPG. If I get even slightly aroused in my car, it's around 10MPG.

I have heard good things about the suspension though on the R3s. IMO from riding in a base RX8 it seems like less then 200 hp. Very doggy.

I would find it hard NOT to be aroused driving an FD. I would be higher then a set of giraffe balls!

Yeah, I never said that I would buy an R3 for the power. It definitely needs a turbo or supercharger. I just like the looks and handling characteristics.

The renisis is definitely the best N/A rotary to ever come from Mazda, I have yet to drive one but they are apparently a bit less "zingy" than the older N/A's. Despite having a higher redline than previous versions they are tuned for a broad power band for the sake of those drivers who dont really get wankels. This leaves tha car feeling a bit lifeless compared to an older car.

I also heard from way back when the 8 was brand new that the side port exhaust left the Renisis less responsive to turbos due to lower exhaust velocity and less heat in the gasses.

This might have to do with the ports dogleg exit or the positioning of the ports relative to the point of ignition or both.

No doubt it cant compare to the seat of the pants feel of a TT FD or proabably a TII but honestly neither of those versions represent the chararacter of the engine best.

The TT in particular was designed from the begining to NOT drive like a rotary. I havent driven one sadly but people have described it as "feeling" more like a big block Vette than the traditional RX's.

The 13B N/A's I have driven have a unique feel and character I just love.

If there is a best, 'sensation,' when driving or riding in a rotary car is that buzz or hum from the engine. I really love the quadrotors ripping like 10-11K before a launch! Pissed off chainsaw...

I think that ^ is what the Renisis is missing that makes it feel somewhat un impressive. The 13B's I have driven all have had a distinct hum through the seat and wheel that just sets your nerves on fire and makes you want to run it out further and further, and it wants to rev for you too!

The renisis seems almost overly refined, the vids I have seen of stock ones being flogged seem as if the audio is missing a track.

The sensation I love about the 7's I have driven has been that feeling that if you just keep giving it more pedal it'll keep building power and intensity until the earth it's self stops spinning. As much as I love my KL it's so damned content driving around being short shifted at 2K and luging it's self up hills I sometimes forget that it can be pegged in the red and that there is a lot of fun to be had if I just swing tha tach past vertical.

The wankel dosnt just wait for you to decide you are ready to have some fun, it's constantly brushing against the threshold whenever you need to pass someone or pull up a hill. You feel the begining of that SURGE everytime you drive it and I cant imagine falling into the commuter mindset in one of those cars unless you are completely dead to the thrill of driving.
