1500 RPM Shit Surge

1481 Views 18 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  SinCity
My friend has a 92 PGT and at idle or anywhere below 1500 RPM the car runs like shit and will turn off if the throttle it fully closed, you have to keep your foot on the gas and even then the RPM's surge a little bit. The car boosts good. I'm thinking it's the fuel prrssure regulator. He changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, and we clean out the IAC Valve. What do ya'll think. If it's not the FPR his next option would be the pump?

sounds like a leak.
Leak from where? Vac or boost pipes? It hits 10-15psi no problem. All vacuum has been eliminated. He just has Brake Booster, BOV, FPR, and Gauge.
idle control valve?
I cleaned it out and inspected it, looks great. It doesn't stick.
doesn't mean it works though lol.

are you running the factory ecu still?

I had chipped it with the Zombie, but we thought that was the problem, so we put the stock chip back in. So yeah to answer question we are currently on the Stock ECU.
tried pulling codes yet? maybe its egr related. (though it shouldn't be.)

also try grounding the test connector and setting the idle screw.
We got a EGR Postion Sensor and Pressure Regulator Control codes. But after resetting the ECU the Pressure Regulator code went away and hasn't come back. We already set the idle with the STI grounded.
tps calibrated and did you check the idle switch?
weird idle...or no idle typically is intake related. I had a similar problem, it was just my VAF sensor. If you have a spare just try the replacing the VAF (airflow meter).
Can a bad VAF sensor cause sputtering while driving and black exhaust smoke when given more throttle? As soon as I hit the gas the rpms drop and it goes nowhere.
it could. could also be a bad ecu or tps sensor out of adjustment.
Fixed the problem. I unplugged the EGR Valve Vacuum.
That's weird, what would that change though, or cause? I just wanna learn so I know to try these things incase of emergency.

egr valve being sticky can cause it to stick open at certain vacuum levels where it shouldn't. if you really wanna learn a lot about these cars, feel free to im me with any question, anytime.
Awesome thanks a lot, it's tough and frustrating when you're foreign to a new car and there are hidden problems in which you don't know where to start looking for them, thanks again.
Get one of these made and call it a day. I had this done a my local muffler shop today.

It sounds like either the EGR was sticking or one of the solenoids on the firewall was bad.
