My car just began idling terribly or stalling out all the time. The car violently jerks when starting from first gear. The check engine light sometimes flickers on and off. What's wrong?

The most common reason for this problem is a hole in the throttle body intake boot. This item needs to be replaced as our cars get older. It is the big rubber accordion-shaped tube that goes from your air filter to the intake (there are two boots on the turbo cars). If it has ANY holes, no matter how small, it can make the car run poorly. Duct tape is not recommended as it does not hold very well, especially under boost from the turbo engines.

You can get a new throttle body boot at your Mazda dealer.

If you find the boot to be in good condition, check your VAF and the connections. (Located near air filter)
