Many cars have 1 stud or lug nut that breaks off, and drive with only 4. They don't seem to have problems. Yet, much advise says to get that taken care of right away, as vibration will create problems.

Is there any proof at all of this ? As long as the 4 lug nuts are kept tight, it doesn't seem like vibration would occur.

Well, the wheel would be out of balance, but since the lug nuts are so near the wheel center, it wouldn't affect the balance as much as missing a similar weight on the circumference of the wheel.

But why take the risk from the extra stress on the remaining 4 lug nuts? It's relatively cheap and easy to replace a stud and lug nut. Remove wheel, hammer out the old stud, hammer in a new stud.

I was looking at it. The front looks fairly easy to replace. There is space you can turn the hub on the side away from the dust shield, and have space to work. To put on the new stud, you can put the car in park so the hub won't turn when you are trying to seat the new stud.

For the back wheels, maybe the hand brake can prevent the hub from turning.

Overall, it seems like having 5 lug nuts is more of a safety feature opposed to a mechanical issue being caused by having only 4.
