The 1st gen 4WS system is quite simple.

13373

For a high definition document get the section 10 - Steering system.PDF below.

The relay has got the following functionalities :
  • Give power (12v) to the 4WS accessories (steper motor, solenoids, sensors ...) if the engine is started and the power steering pump running
  • Give power (12v) to the 4WS CU if the engine is started and the power steering pump running
  • Light up the 4WS lamp on the meter when you turn the key to Ignition (second position) for few seconds (that why there is a timer) and if there is an error within the relay when the engine is running
13375

The relay plug is connected with 7 wires.
13376

A = +12 volt direct battery
B = + 12V after Ignition position
D = 4WS lamp on the meter
F = 4WS Accessories
H = 4WS CU
I = +12 charging when the alternator is running
J = Earth

If you have an 4WS error that come and goes or if the lamp is always illuminated in most of the cases you have a Relay problem.

The relay is located under the RHD seat.
it's reference number is G238677B0 or G238677B0A and is not available anymore.

On my car, i had an come and go 4WS error.
I open both parts of the relay.

I tried to change the condensators on the circuit board.
Most of the time theses electronic component don't age well after 20 years +.

The error was still there, the soledring under the board seems ok so it took another aproach.

After a quick analysis with my multimeter, i identify the following beaviour :

1- With the key on OFF :
A = 12 v
B = 0 V (key on OFF)
D = 12 V (4WS lamp OFF)
F = 0 V
H = 0 V
J = earth
I = 0 V (engine not started)

2- With the key on Ignition :
A = 12 v
B = 12 V (key on Ig)
D is connected to earth for few seconds by the relay in order to light 4WS lamp on the meter, then is open again an the light comes OFF
F = 0 V
H = 0 V
J = earth
I = 0 V (engine not started)

3- Engine started:
A = 12 v
B = 12 V (key on Ig)
D = 12 V (4WS lamp OFF)
F = 12 V (power is given to the 4WS accessories
H = 12 V (power is given to the 4WS CU)
J = earth
I = 12 V (engine STARTED)

If the relay is malfunctionning, the relay connect D to the earth and the 4WS lamp comes ON.
Note : if there is an error within the 4WS CU the lamp will be blinking with a specific pattern depending on the error.

In order to retrieve your 4WS capabilities you can replace the existing relay and timer by a simple and very cheap standard 4 pin relay.
The idea is to give power to the 4WS Accessories and CU when the engine is started and the power steering pump running.
In this case you do not get the 4WS lamp lightup for few seconds when you pout the key on Ignition.

What you whant to achieve is the following :
  • If the key is OFF or the key is on Ignition and the engine is not stared the 4WS Accessories end CU are not powered.
  • If the key is on Ignition and the engine is stared the 4WS Accessories end CU are powered.
It can be achieved by simply connecting :
  • pin 86 to I wire (12v with alternator running)
  • pin 30 to A wire (+12v battery)
  • pin 87 to H and F wires (4WS Acc and CU)
  • pin 85 to J wire (earth)
Because you might get an alternator light slightly illuminated with this wiring you qhould also connect Pin 87 to I.
i know i test it.

The correct wiring is the following

It can be achieved by simply connecting :
  • pin 86 to I wire (12v with alternator running)
  • pin 30 to A wire (+12v battery)
  • pin 87 to H, F (4WS Acc and CU) and I wires
  • pin 85 to J wire (earth)
you can fit exerything in the original relay box.
13382

You can plug it back and will regain your 4WS capabilities.
Except that the 4WS lamp will not illuminate when you put the Key on Ignition

Hope this will help.
Have fun driving your 4WS.

If you want to still have the 4WS lamp on ignition position (it will be ON until the engine is running and not for few seconds as the timer) it can be achived with 2 relays, one 4 pins and one 5 pins.
The 5 pins is the same as the 4 but with a rest position connecting pin 30 to 87a.

The following wiring is required for the lamp in addition to the previous one for the 4WS Accessories and CU.

5 pin LAMP relay :
  • pin 86 to I wire (12v with alternator running)
  • pin 30 to D wire (4WS lamp)
  • pin 87 to nothing
  • pin 87a to pin 87 on the 4 pin relay
  • pin 85 to J wire (earth)
4 pin LAMP relay :
  • pin 86 to B wire (12v if ignition)
  • pin 30 to J wire (earth)
  • pin 87 to pin 87a on the 5 pin relay
  • pin 85 to J wire (earth)
The 4ws lamp will be always ON if the key is on ignition and the engine not stared.
It is not the exact factory behaviour but it quite close to it.

Note: i have not tested this wiring, if someone does please leave a feedback here.
