It really depends on how much, and whether there is clouds of blue smoke out the back of the exhaust.. all cars will eventually use a little oil.

Just don't mention the large cloud of smoke you saw billowing out the back of my 6 at the last meet John.

As John said, how much?
I know there's something wrong with my 6 as I'm using about 1ltr every 600-700 miles.
Not good

i think its about a quart every 500 miles. when i start it up cold, there is alot of smoke, then once it warms up, there is none.

i suppose it doesnt help that im using 5w-30, but i want to use thin oil in the winter so it will start easier.

yea my MX drinks oil, and I still dont know what the culprit is. It caries, it smokes sometimes under hard accel, or after slowing down, yet my plugs look perfectly normal HMM....

Brian... yours sounds like the valve seals....

Veltpak... maybe seals and worn bores.. depending if it's very high miles..

Basically..

Remove the Heads.
compress the valve springs and remove... seals are underneath.

You will nead a head gasket set... most also include the valve seals, and can be purchased for less than $100 (non genuine Mazda)

wow,
what would be the harm if i just kept adding oil when it got low?
( other than the cost of oil and polluting the environment :)

none really, other than inconvenience...

It could last many 1000's of miles before it needs to be overhauled.. i.e. that much oil burning, so it doesn't run properly..

if its smokin when cold and stops when warmed up, it could be bad rings like mine. i smoke at fist startup and then it stops when it warms up and it uses alot of oil. im just limping it along till i have my F2T is built. if it was valve seals it would do it all the time and alot, mine were bad and it smoked badly all the time. i replaced them and it helped alot but my rings are shot. to replace the seals is not really that hard. u will need compressede air to pressureize the cylinder so when u take off the springs, the valve wont fall into the combustion chamber. do one cylinder at a time. btw, becareful of the hla when putting the valve train back into place, thjey could fall out and end up in the oil pan.(and i am speaking from experience!) my 2 cents points to some worn out rings.
