89 probe gt dies at idle

With the help of a friend, I got the turbo problem fixed, he had a spare one and we put it in, the turbo we pulled out was totally shot, about an inch of shaft play, the oil seals went out he said, which he told me doesnt just happen within a few hours, that it was a problem before i bought the car. now the car dies once its turned on, and if the engine runs it will idle at a bout 300rpms. no leaks, no smoke coming from anywhere, i took it for a drive around the block, it was VERY very rough, sounded super bogged down. when i got home, i noticed a rattling coming from the exhaust, well, turned the car off and looked, there were chunks of this weird material coming out of it, i dont know if its from the glass pack or the cat converter. so 2 questions :

A: if it was plugged up could that be the reason for the rough idle, no boost being built up, or my boost gauge going crazy bouncing all over the place?

B: now since it broke, there is no back pressure and thats making the car run rough?

here is a picture of the substance:

also i noticed the HUD display says the car is getting 10 mpg, so it is obviously running REALLY rich too, if that helps with diagnosing.

Looks like ti came from you CAT:

"The exhaust system in your vehicle is designed to release exhaust gases from the engine to the rear of the car. This system is designed to have about 3 pounds of exhaust backpressure under full throttle. This means the engine should not have to push more than 3 pounds of pressure to release the exhaust at any given time. If a catalytic converter plugs or breaks apart it will plug the exhaust system causing an engine surge."

your cat exploded, explains every symptom including the bits of catalytic converter falling out your exhaust

p.s. dissconnect your exhuast from the front of the cat and if it idles 100% better you'll know for sure.
Got it figured out, the spark plugs were not in the right order. Car runs fine now and pulls strong too.

Damn back yard mechanics!:p
of course the car pulls hard just like it did when we drove the car arround here before you bought it, was there a thing wrong with it at all before u bought it, no not at all. oh and the only person that has the spark plugs wired wrong are u, i got that car for nothing cause the "back yard" mechanic had the wires hooked up wrong, and thats why he never got it running right. oh and btw that catco hi flow cat is about a year old, atleast u dont have to pass emmisions this year. u will next year. btw there no way u can get 35mpg with the wires hooked up wrong, and thats what we got while doing the test drive before u bought it.. rookie back yard mechanics
