Just to round off a great 7 days i think my car is saying to me (send me to rest in peace) :(

Last night going to football i was driving along and it seemed like the gears were sticking, anyway didnt think to much of it, But this morning was a nitemare getting too work, 0-25mph its ok the gears are fine, 25-30 the gears start sticking, over 40mph the revs wont go below 4000rpm and get to 50mph the revs wont go below 5000rpm,
Its just like when a clucth goes in a manual!

Now tell me if iam wrong i could i be looking at a new auto gearbox? :( :( :( or does it come in sections so i may b able to just replace a couple of mechamnisms?
Ive got the car goin down the local garage today after work to c about the other problems ie from my other post :(

Really looking bleek guys at the moment, depending if sorted depends if i make it to the meet up in the new forest(or shud i say if i have any money) :)

Depending on cost of repairs to probs will depend on weather the 6 is sold as spares :(

Thanx

Stu

Ps(never buy an auto listen to garath) LOL :)

Hi Stu,

Sorry to hear youre having problems mate.. just not your week is it?

It does sound like a new box required to me, but others may know better, or confirm that.. have you had a root around for possible prices yet?

Just a quick post as it's time for work....

You should be able to pull codes from the tranny.
check the atf fluid level

As you know, it is electronically controlled, so relies on a number of sensors and solenoids.. not necessarily a mechanical fault.

I will check the book later.

Sorry to hear that mate...

If your cars not on the road you can always tag a lift with me to the New Forest, doesn't help your car situ much, but I know nowt about gears and stuff... Sorry!

Not sure about this one m8, but if it's anything like the ford scorpio auto box then there is a control unit that sit in the sump of the auto box (yes it sits inside the box in hot fulid eek!), which controls a lot of the box functions, like changing speeds, if that has gone m8 then you are looking at a lot of money m8, sorry but it a specialist job not a garage job.

Hope John can find something in the book for you m8, and like he say check fluid.

Replacing parts ,hmm only real thing you could replace yourself are things like the drive plate, torque converter, and some odds and ends but thats about it and i wouldn't even advise you to change them as you still need to know what you are doing fitting a new torque converter to a car, and thats not your problem anyway.

Sorry Stuart

( Im normally helpful at this point - but .. )

HAHAHAH - Still think the Auto is worth more @-

Hehe - Couldnt resist after the goings on a few weeks back.

Right back to normal mode. I dont think its mechanical - After all its changing gears ! I suspect ( as the other already say ) a sensor of some form - you may or may not need to replace the box to get it changed but it could be somthing very simple - Check your fuse box as an easy quick check - maybe a sensor circuit has died ? ( doubtful but worth checking )

Stu..

Need more info.. as much as possible please.

does the kickdown work?
is the hold functioning properly?
is the tranny overheating, burnt fluid is not a good sign.
does the car accelerate normally (enough power) or is it like a clutch slipping?

there are some tests you can do..

Stall test
time lag test

others need a pressure gauge.

the book has 297 pages just for the auto box... it's that complicated.

Ther are 3 areas that may be causing the problem... Electronic system, Hydraulic system, powertrain (mechanical).. It could still be something mechanical, such as the control valve, or clutches.

as I said earlier, you really need to pull the codes (if any) this will tell you if any sensors or solenoids are malfunctioning..
follow the instructions in the diagnostic reading thread..

The kick down seems just to rev it up more mate,

Sometimes it lags and revs high then other times it goes like a rocket wen you have hardly sqeezed the gas!

It seems to me as its like wen a clutch goes,

as i say i get 40mph then i cant get it below 4000rpm(i must of used 1/4 of a tank of petrol going 10minss down the road) :)

The power is there until you get to 30-40mph then just revs and the power is gone really,

Hmmm just think the car could be in a garage for a while think of the hourly rate :) Doh

Well to me the oil smelt burnt so it could well be something is smoking :(

Cheers John

Do all the gears appear to be changing, or put another way, does it get into all the gears?

if it's the clutches, I'm afraid it's a rebuild... or a recon box.. either way, you're not going on holiday next year. :(

hi stewart,

sounds like a bit of bad luck mate..........................

i think the bands are slipping or possibly breaking up. one symptom of this is a burnt smell and a darkening colour to the oil, possibly with friction material showing as small black bits in the oil.

best bet is get the car to an auto box specialist and get em to drop the sump plate of the gear box. they will be able to tell then.

on the optomistic side, the bands may just want adjusting, but i suspect not.

however, make sure the oil level is correct first, as an auto box makes all sort of symptoms if such a simple thing is not correct, to the point that slipping bands or incorrect gear changing can happen. to get an accurate check of the oil tis best with two pepes. one sits in the car, with the car in drive, engine running with the hand brake on and foot on the break. this is for your safety while you check the oil. handbook just says run thru gears and then check when in neutral or park with the engine running, however the box isnt under pressure that way, so gives a slightly incorrect reading.

as an aside, if the box has never been serviced, probs could also come from a blocked filter in the box, as they are supposed to be cleaned periodically.

if there is contaminant in the box as in bits of friction material, some of them could also block some of the small oil channels in the matrix, this is the bit that partly controls the working of the box re gear changing etc.

lastly, but much more unlikely, do u have a whirring noise as well?? if so, then look to the torque converter for loss of power probs and this is reflected in having to race the engine for any performance.

hope this helps

Are there speed sensors on the auto boxes ?

If its working fine upto 30-40 then its not the clutch - as thats where it would effect it most. If it cant get above 50 sounds like its not changing up to 4th or 5th ...

( I dont know alot about auto boxes as i try to avoid them )

Maybe the syncromech has gone :p ( Joke ) But whatever does the same job in an auto box..

There are speed sensors, solonoids, clutch bands, pressure sensors, and god knows what else.. all electronically controlled by its own ECU, and the engine ECU..

If it is completely done in... it may be a good excuse to put in a manual box.. ask Kyle..

Ok lads,

I went to the garage last night, the person sat nxt to me in the car we went round the block and he straight away said its the clucth plates :( oh the first thing he picked up was the wheel bearing :)

And yes the oil is very badly cooked with no particals in it,

Anyway they wanted(sit down for this) £1000 for a recon that includes fitting!

So i took it to another place where i got me water pump done, he said its definitly the Clutch plate, he gave me a number to ring for a jap specialist replacements,
Anyway phoned them and a low milage J-spec auto box was £250including delivery from ireland :), the mechanic can fit it for he said £200-£250!!
So in all a £500 job,Half the amount i thought it would be!
At the same time he is doing the bearing, cv joint if needed, steering rack if needed :(

John how easy is it to convert to a manual?Costs?

John or anyone else does a J-spec auto box fit and is ok for our standard cars???if so £250 sound good? £500all in?

Mike, the oil is burnt and the gear box is making a whirring noise and this morning struggling in prob 2nd 3rd gear too :( so it may be a multiple problem, The auto box specilist wants £80-£90 just to look at it :( then to fix the prob could be £££££s!!

Cheers boys(i took all these coments down to the garage hehehehe they were abit astounded to what peeps new :) )

Thanks

Stuart

PS Gareth i now no why the auto holds its value better, because by the time you rebuild it you have a new car :) which sells for more :) LOL

Btw now i may get ribbed, The fact that i can afford to fix the 6 is down to my mum shes paying the repairs for now!

}) }) call me a mummys boy but iam her taxi service and i told her i was scraping the car as i could not afford repairs, i am paying her back when i can :) So thank my mum for keeping another 6 on the road :)

Kyle will be better at answering these, as he has done it before.
although I would say the J-spec box will fit ok.

I have never had an auto, and with 197 pages just on the box itself, it just shows how complex it is.

anyway, well done to your Mum, I say make all Mums honourary members of the board })
