Hi all

Need some help with Oracle 9i in a RAC environment - I am obviously not an Oracle DBA but this database has been dumped on me to maintain.

In the Oracle\Admin there is a file called Alert_*.log for each database (where * = database name).

How big can u allow this file to grow and what can I do if this thing gets to big?
The current size is 4GB for the one specific DB where all the other alert files for the other databases are +/- 1 MB in size.

I know u cannot just delete this file but why u are not allowed to delete it I don't know.

What can I do with this file - I am running out of disk space?

cheers
Will

Update

Well
thanks again Russ

Nice tool I've implemented it and it works great - after some further research I found that u can delete this file it will have no negative effect on the database, it is just error logs in there - Basically u need to archive it on a regular basis. and u can create a new one manually.

The reason they do not want u to delete the file is for history purposes, thats all, it is not a system critical file according to the notes I have read these last 24 hours.

cheers
