Just a heads up, it is A LOT of work. Any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Charles and I did my gold car in 4 hours total. good thing about 1st gen is everything is plug and play.
you need
the clutch pedal
shifter linkage and rod
transaxle
flywheel
clutch
rear tranny mount
and manual tranny midshaft.
clutch slave cyl, master cyl and line.

good thing is all the mounting hole already on the car

I take it you didn't remove the instrument cluster and remove the shift indicators? You must have rewired the wires going to the transmission instead of changing the harness?

Exactly what i've done a few times now. Easily doable in 4 hours.

Changing that main harness would be a down right pain in the arse and a complete waste of time.

You only need to run 1 wire to make the reverse lights work, and bridge two other ones to bypass the inhibitor switch.
Changing the main harness is a piece of pie is better than running wires.

i didnt rewire anything and neither do i change it. you dont have to. bypass the inhi switch and run a jumper to the other harness below the battery tray and you are done. why will you change the instrumental cluster?. not needed. also you dont have to change the ecu. the stock auto ecu works great .

i can confirm this. the auto and manual ecus are the same. i have a theory that its set by pin 1v on 88-89 and 1u on 90-92. if its grounded then its in mtx mode.

I never changed the engine harness or ECU. But I did change the transmission harness, alternator harness, and alternator. (The manual transmission-equipped cars had a different alternator.) Being I had a complete parts car I decided to make the car just like it would have been had it come from the factory with a 5 speed. This way there would be no confusion about replacement parts down the road.

I also changed the struts out to the manual transmission struts as my strut bearings were bad. And the instrument cluster didn't get totally changed out. I just used the blockout plates if I remember correctly.

But yes, the swap can be done with less work than I did but I don't do anything half-assed. I also replaced every hose, belt and seal on the engine when I did the swap. I even pulled the engine and completely scrubbed the engine compartment before I put everything back together.

what wire do i need to bridge to bypass the inhibitor switch?
Underneath your engine bay fuse box, there is four plugs for the auto. You need to bridge the two large wires on this plug.

The third wire on this plug is for your reverse lights, just wire up a 12v ign source to one side of the reverse switch on the gearbox, and the other side to this wire.

I'm currently finishing this swap. Placed the jumper and could hear the fuel pump going but the motor does not turn over. Starter solenoid not even engaging. Is there anything else I missed.

Thanks

Depending on what you did with the harness that went to the shifter mechanism, there was a switch there that will only allow you to start the car in park or neutral.
there are two. one for the light and the other is jumpered.
It's called the inhibitor switch...I hope I didn't botch that. I'm finishing up my install with a swap as well lol
