I am going to be replacing an axle on my 89 gt and i would like to make sure i have all the tools ready before hand, can someone tell me what size socket i will need for the axle nut?

the only reason i was asking is because i dont have any sockets that big, and i need to go out and buy one ahead of time, thanks.
do yourself a favor and get a 3/4 inch socket and impact gun. If the axle has never been removed before it will help a lot.
I used to struggle with those damn nuts until i got a 3/4 in impact socket set and the gun
I take mine off all the time with a 3/8" ratchet.

Yeah if its all the time it does not take much; The first time i did mine it took quite some "convincing" before it came off.
A lot of people also forget to unstake the nut before removing it, so it gives a lot more of a problem that way.

I dont think Ive ever had a problem with removing it with a 1/2" either.
i always use a 1/2 to get them off
You got lucky. The car I just parted had a stuborn(sp) one.... 1/2 inch gun or 2 foot breaker infront of my 200 lbs and a 15 mintue heat soak with a propane torch could not get it to budge. So the entire hub came out.

Ive never had any trouble getting them off with a 1/2 impact, Just make sure to buy a good impact, i know they are expensive but you will use it time and time again. I have a 500 ft. lb. mac that i have yet to find something it wont take off. Also the Ingersol's are very good.
Yup the Mac's are second to none.... But the $$$$ are WOW!!....
Time to up grade for me.

i took the drivers side off with a 3 foot breaker bar, attempted the passenger side and broke both of my 1/2" breaker bars.

my bother got it off after a half-hour and penetrating lubricant with the impact... impacts do make it really easy tho

Ive only had one that bad, and even a 20minute torching with an acetalyne torch and with oil (to shock the threads), getting it red hot and trying to remove it with a 1000ftlb 1/2impact wrench wouldnt budge it. We eneded up replacing the whole hub on that one too:lol:

I had it as a keepsake in the garage for the longest time:lol: We sheared the drives off 3 of our 1/2" breaker bars/socket wrenches, and the shop broke one of thiers also trying to remove it:(

But even today, we removed my brother's rear axle nut, and all we used was a 1/2" breaker bar and a 3' cheater bar, and it came off without even unstaking the nut:shrug:
Taking the nuts of the DX, no problem. 1/2" breaker bar with a 3' cheater bar broke 'em free, then used the impact gun. On the LX, I ended up breaking the breaker bar... Used the impact to wiggle them loose a bit then managed to snap them out with a 1/2" ratchet. Damn things.
