Hi guys,

Well i should be picking my MX6 up next week, and already im thinking about some subtle mods. I intend to fit a CAI at some stage, im an engineer by trade and so i intend to fabricate a lightweight stainless pipe and drop for the CAI, which i can do. My prob is im a real novice at mods, etc so Help me here.

I have a powerflow( i think thats what it is) back box on the escort im selling, i was thinking of standardising the escort before selling but that leaves me with this rather smart back box ( lovely tune it gives) would it go on the MX6?? Why waste it? Are back boxes specific for models?, or are they reasonably universal providing they can be fitted?? May be a silly question to you guys but gone are my days of restoring old Alfa Romeos, and modding has changed so much since then and i havent kept up. Its a single pipe back box with a soft square tail, about 4 inches in diameter.

Any advice?

Cheers

Yes most exhausts are specific to a certain car, there is no doubt that if you have the welding plant and pipes then you could get the rear box off the escort to fit. but for £165 you could have a Scorpion delivered to you and it sounds better than the powerflow :).

A CAI will improve acceleration from middle to high revs, and should therefore give a higher top speed too.

Nobody drives at 140mph+ all the time... well... except cruisemad }) and low to mid range power for acceleration is better than just top end.

Hi Marty,
I have to agree with Andy in that the exhaust back box would probably not be worth the effort. As to whether the Scorpion sounds better or not, that's down to personal preference... })
Perhaps it'd be worth waiting to see what the exhaust is like on your 6 when you get it before making any decision though.

I would be very interested in seeing what you come up with for a CAI down pipe. That is one thing that we have to either import from USA or pay way over the odds for. If you were willing to make to order I'm sure there would be quite a market among the MX6 owners - and probably the Probers too.

If you want a pipe to model yours on, give me a shout.

Cheers,

Me too (Powerflow), and I totally agree :) :) :)

As for the CAI link, sorry - that ain't one.
K&N only do a filter that bolts on to the VAF. It draws hot air, not cold. To get cold air you need to isolate the filter from the engine heat and have a feed of cold air onto it.

The only CAIs that I'm aware are commercially available are the Hotshot and Pipercross Viper, both at well over £200.
Either that or you take your chances on eBay like I did. (No doubt someone will jump in and correct me though.)

It's either that, or make your own. I'm just hoping that some enterprising person (martyg???) will start making pipes over here and sell them at a reasonable price. I for one would be willing to pay for a second slightly shorter pipe for the Winter...

Sorry, I can't see it. From that site:

"The Main box contains two smaller boxes (Filter box/Cleaning Kit box) and the following items:

Two 6mm x 20mm Aallen bolts
Three 6mm nylock nuts
One 8mm bolt
3 Flat washers
1 Long "Z" bracket
1 Short "Z" bracket
2 Hose menders
1 Vacuum hose
1 Twist bracket
1 "O" ring
One 6mm x 20mm hex bolt
1 Wave washer
Installation Instructions
1 C.A.R.B. exemption sticker
Air Filter Service Instructions
Warranty Claim Card
Two 3-1/2" x 1-3/8" "K&N Performance Filters" stickers

The Filter box contains:
1 Filtercharger element
One #52 Hose clamp
Purchaser Profile & Product Registration sheet (has detachable "Important Service Information" flap)
1 "Do Not Discard" sticker
One 3-1/2" x 1-3/8" "K&N Performance Filters" sticker

The Cleaning Kit box contains:
One 12-ounce bottle of Air Filter Cleaner
One 8-ounce bottle of Air Filter Oil
Air Filter Service Instructions"

No mention of a CAI pipe or even a hose to direct cold air to the filter. The Vacuum hose is to replace the one that fits between the airbox and throttle body if that's what you were thinking of. The 2 hose menders are presumably rubber couplings, as I see no mention of them anywhere else. Look at the photos too - surely if it was a complete kit they'd show it?

Please, anyone, if I'm being totally thick and missing the obvious, tell me...

When i pick up the 6, i will contact you, we can meet. You give me the dimensions i need , i will try to manufacture a stainless version. See how it goes, but my company makes SS pipework all the time so it shouldnt be too much trouble, the expensive bit is buying in raw material.

another bournmouth member??? isnt it a little unfair if over 3000 of the 4000 '6's imported to the uk went to one town??

with regards the initial bit of the thread, i have a scorpian back box on the black car, sounds loverly. imo its a little quieter than some, which suits me as too much noise on a long run can be a little tiring. i learnt that with double janspeeds on me old 2.8 capri.

ken, your exhaust is just right, when we were driving thru the new forest, and you were leading the way, your exhaust note helped as much as a gps(grin).

It certainly seems that way sometimes. ;)

You get what you pay for...
The Hotshot is a proven product, especially if you go for a ceramic pipe (keeps cooler). The other one is coloured ally. Probably fits just as well but is a less quality product.

Eeeny, meeny, miny, mo...

I have the ceramic Hotshot CAI from Rafi at RR Racing, he did me a great deal, the intake arrived quickly and once fitted creates a lurverly growling note as you floor the accelerator and the revs begin to pick up. :D

I know which one i'd go for!!!!
