Can't get the crank/timing gear bolt off

1123 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  defiler
So, was working on the car this past weekend, and wanted to replace my crank oil seal.

Had everything off and ready, but could NOT get the bolt to budge. Even put the wheels back on, cranked hard right, dropped it to the ground and STILL couldn't get the bolt to budge. I tried using a breaker bar, air gun and a torque wrench.

Any ideas? I know I can replace the seal myself...but how do I get that damn bolt out?

Thanks.

Your gonna have to get a 3/4 Impact Gun.
I was using a 1/2" air impact gun, still no dice. Everything was 1/2", the breaker bar, torque wrench, air impact gun. STILL didn't budge it. My buddy doesn't have a 3/4" impact gun either, and it's not worth buying one for this.
U need a impact gun that could deliver 700 ft.-lbs. Also how are u holding the crank so that it wont move when u are using a breaker bar?
i had that same problem........ i tried it with a cheap impact and it wouldnt budge. The I drove it for about a week and went to the shop and got my good impact and it buzzed it right off. Try soaking it in some penetrating oil for a little bit and see if that helps.
When using the breaker bar, and as instructed by Zach, I had the wheels on the car, on the ground, and the transmission in gear to allow some leverage.

But it sounds like I just need a more powerful impact wrench, or to take it to a shop *sigh*.

Anyone got a heavy duty impact gun and 21mm socket I can borrow? :)
Is not going to work like that well atleast to me is not, get your self a CHAIN WRENCH and it goes around the pulley so that it could hold it in place and take that animal out lol

Hmm..I'll see if I can't find one in the area. Thanks for that info, karma to you!
Thanx for the karma. Heres this Sears.com

Plenty of 1/2 impacts can deliver that (or much more) power;)

Maybe you need a longer breaker bar/cheater bar? I know we always used a 3' or 4' bar to get our pulley bolts off:shrug:

Now I know this is the most completly unsafe way to do things, but there is another way....

Jack the car up on jackstands. Put the socket on the breaker bar. Then put the breaker bar on the bolt, and let the bar come to rest freely on the ground so it wont go anywhere.

Then get in the car and turn over the motor real quick:eek: (make sure to pull the connector on the VAF and the INJ fuse. Dont want the car actually starting when you do it). the force of the motor turning the pulley should break the bolt free.

I assume no responsibility if you try the above and your bolt shears off:lol:

i just broke mine loose and tightened it back up last week with the chain wrench and breaker bar, no problem

ive done that for the crank bolt in the ford escort before, works perfectly.
... wow that has "ohh shit ohh shit somebody call an ambulance!" all over it:tdown: i used a BIG pipe (about 4 feet) as a cheater and broke 2 new husky wrenches then busted out ole faithful (a 20-30+ year old craftsman) and pop goes the weasel off like a charm. just FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! make sure you take the wrench off before starting the car again... i had the key halfway turned before i remembered and caught myself.

I fail to see how you could get hurt when you'd be in the car...
Zach actually mentioned that method to me as well, and even though I'd be in the car, I don't want anything else to get damaged.

Me thinks the chain wrench will be the way to go for this task. Thanks for the link Keeloh!

Yeah...that's the last resort method
Oh yea, definitely a last chance solution for sure.
