bullet finally bitten

in for rocker covers, atx oil change, 12k service..

not a good start.. i've got a loan car.. as they didn't have enough time..

toyota averya or something (small gutless auto shopping cart!)

and so far they say that both hand break cables are seized ... (i knew about one) I 'take' it a good garage will be able to tell if its caliper or cable..?

i'm sure the list will grow.. will be looking for advice as the week progresses..

thanks,

t.

HOW FOOKING MUCH!

ok.. so they 'can't tell if it the calipers cos they need to cut the cables to test the calipers??

AND....

AND....

they want £400 to fit new break cables (2.5 hours lab + £61 a cable)

I did laugh... a lot... £400 for break cables...

thing is it'll fail the MOT next time without them.. but there is no way i'm pay £400
for that work...

oh and new pads £130 for the front and £150 for the rears...

so... almost £300 there too..

SOD that! GAV!! can you fit pads???

They don't need to cut the cables to tell if it's the calipers they just need to remove the single cable bracket bolt from the caliper. Walk away from these people, they are trying to take your balls and come back for the sack too!
If you buy a manual and follow the instructions carefully it will take no more than an hour to do all this work. Cables about £30 each, pads £20 front, same back and new calipers if necessary can be had for £80 a side. Have a look around your area for people you see working on cars all the time. That's your local amateur mechanic and chances are he would do the lot for £50.

Would rarther let a one armed, senile blind badger work on my car than Kwik Fit mate. Never trust them to do more than fit a tyre. Also you might find they do the old " Hmm , looks like you need X, Y and Z as well as these bits mate " and the price will sky rocket. AVOID AVOID AVOID. Find an independent mate. (Speaking from experience !)

Tim, my local mech will fit pads for £10 if you supply the pads... It's not that hard to do apparantly, but I'm lazy and can't be arsed messing around with it myself... and £10 is nothing really.

He's not a Mazda specialist, so I only use him for basic stuff... I have no idea about hand brake cables. I can ask him next time I see him.

well, I picked the car up on saturday.. nice to have her back!

she seems very smooth and nice and quiet....

and I have lights.... they replaced a relay! ? ?

so I can tick off the following from my list:

rocker covers (front and rear) YEA!!!
full ATX oil change and filter clean! YEA!!!
brake flush
coolant flush
front and rear brakes, strip, clean, new pads
12k service
lights fixed
probably more but i've forgotten already!

so now I just need:

hand brake
suspension
bodywork

I recon I can mange all that early next year!

Good one Tim. It's always nice to get a few of the 'niggles' out of the way.

I've just got mine back from a service too. Engine feels smooth, if a little noisy.
And fingers crossed with the oil usage. I'll have to wait and see.

thanks Russ.. it IS nice to get these jobs out of the way and considering how much I don't use her.. its a decreasing scale of expenditure.... well almost! :D

how much did it cost.. you really really really don't want to know, but I could have bought Gav j-spec and had some left over!

lets just say rocker covers atx and service didn't leave much from a monkey!

and I added a load more work on top...

but hey.. its done now.. and it time to think of other things.. like getting my suspension fitted, my brake light, mirrors etc...

:D
