I've just got a 2.5" pipe (crush bent unfortunately, go mandrel if you can afford it), with a Walker straight thru turbo muffler to the rear of the back wheel. No resonator. With a 3" 45 degree bent down tip to finish it off. Stainless painted black, no chrome. I've never been a fan of flashey but each to his own . The system sounds good (well I think so,that's all that maters). Low and bubbley, especially in the back seat. It's definately not LOUD but a good note. My next step is to get a 3" dump out of the turbo & some sort of highflow cat. Funny, some exhaust shops say there is no gain from a high flow and some say there is:shrug:

for any exhaust best is one that is mandrel bent 2.5inch is fine for factory turbo but go 3inch if you can. Resonator is recomended same size as pipe as it will stop most drowning noise and keep it respectable at crusie speeds. Muffler striaght through type be it and off center is the factroy replacment type which jsut menas gas enters on the left at one end goes straight through into an open area and leaves out oposite or center of other end of muffler.
but 2.5Inch minimum best is 3inch mandrel for stock turbo and even most aftermarket
But hey I'm talking and I say 4inch mandrel bent no mufflers @-

You know it makes sense

does mandrel bent make difference to the sound? and how much extra is it compared to normal?

does a resonater make it louder or softer or does it change the tone??

i want a soft bubbly low pitched purrrrr...i hate exhausts i hear on cars like corollas that have that high pitched annoying buzz

those pitched annoying buzz's are those who have just bolted on a muffler way too big on a NA car with no other exhaust mods and no resonators.

I'm running a 2.5 inch system with a resonator and has a nice low deep sound. not too loud (below legal limit) Mandrel is expensive, so I comprimised and had a press-bent cat-back but a mandrel bent front pipe :D

You will gain a few horsies with mandrel bends. When i had my exausted fitted, the owner told me that there is minimal gains between press and mandrel when you have a stock car with a few mods. If ya gonna push massive power from ya car, go mandrel. If your happy with a 150-200hp car, press bent pipes will do the job effectively. The price difference between press and mandrel was $280.

My zorst is 2.5inch mandrel bent from turbo to hi flo cat. Than 2.5inch press bent cat back to a 2.5inch straight through lukey muffler with dual 2.5inch tips. Heres a crappy pic ---[ ]-<::
The press bent pipes turned out well! The diameter of the bends are approx 2.3inch. The reason i opted for the dualies is to keep the mx looking like a sleeper but my friends and i know the truth.

The note it makes is superb! The note at idle is a very low rumble but gets louder as the revs increase. No tinny sound exists at all and you can still here the spoolin turbo and thumping bass from ya subs. Overall, im very pleased with my exhaust system in both power gains and tone.

After hearing a few mx's and tx5's whizzing past, you may find that our mx can just naturally make the deep wholesome tone your after which honda's cant achieve.

If you only want to do it for the noise, go press bent. For performance go for a decent mandrel bent system.

Try to get a decent muffler too. I have full 3" mandrel bent, I did have a nice 3" lukey muffler, which quietened it down a lot. Now I have a big rice cannon, which is no where as quiet, pops and burbles a lot and is probably louder than I would like. The lukey was a better bet!

You shouldnt get that stupid noise you hear from a lot of small NA cars either.

has anyone got pics of their mufflers...especially the lukey mufflers..cause u guys have steered me in that direction :)

p.s. the reason i was after a cannon was for the look..do lukey provide nice chrome cannons that have a LOW purr??? or are all cannons loud?

The lukey I had was very plain looking. I sold it on for $50 with a chrome tip. It just looked kinda boring though!
It was a lukey 3" race.

The rice cannon on there at the moment was about $300 fitted.

The lukey was way better for muffling and sound, it just looked plain. I dunno if they offer anything more attractive.

You will have to speak to your local dealer regarding the differences in the lukey range but im running the ultra flow. The ultra flow is a straight though design and it was the most free flowing muffler the zorst shop supplied apart from cannon type.

In terms of looks, sure it does look really plain but it depend on the look your after. The muffler also sits up higher so there is no chance that it will scrape along the ground even if you've dropped your mx.

I'd love to post pics for you ducktape69 but dont have access to upload the images.

Pm me your email details and i'll get some pics for ya tomorrow!

The zorst hits the right note for me. The sound is a low deep rumble at idle, as deep as any 4cyclinder car ive heard before. It's not overly loud but noticable to say i've upgraded.

does it get much louder during acceleration?
At idle to 2500rpms its a low rumble. I love it between 2500-4500rpms. Thats when the zorst is at its loudest and the tone is even deep than at idle.
Above 4500rpms it's still loud but the pitch rises slightly as it reachs rev line. Than you go through the whole cycle again in another gear. Im just guessing my zorst at it's loudest would be 84db.

can u easily hear the turbo spooling still?
As mentioned earlier, you do. I've got a pod so spoolin is louder compared to being in the airbox. I just love to hear my engine and turbo going through the paces also incase my engine makes a weird sound i wanna be able to hear it before it could cause any further damage.

Pics are on the way!

thx again yodo :)

i also have a pod and my spooling is loud...which is why i have opted to go exhaust-free thus far...but a whole in my exhaust popped up this week which makes a buzzing noise...so i need to make a choice between the:
Ultra Flo Muffler
Turbo Muffler
Race Muffler

if anyone has feedback on any of these..pls buzz..thx all :)

by the way...i took a look under my car today, and i noticed there are lots of sharp bends..one for the fuel tank and one for the 4WS rack...will it cost me more to get the cat back exhaust for these bends? or will the new exhaust just go straight under the chassis?

Don't go under the chassis The bends are not that bad especially if 2.5 inch plenty of room. You cna go up to 100mm diameter pipe. I know as I have tried used a setup from a R31 Aus skyline bends almost made it.

200SX and WRX's go under and it's why even a stock 200SX with 3inch exhaust is defectable. it sits lower then a 100mm from the ground.

Go up and over it looks bad but it's worth every penny.
I just wish I had mine 3inch mandrel, but I dont' care noise is worth nothing for me.
As for the whole nosie thing I recommend you tihs go to your chossen exhaust shop on the day wait and have a listen you cna then decide if it's too loud too soft ETC.

I know Chris at australia's best is like that wil lget the sound you want. Even Illegal, but it's not his fault if you get defected.

ahh..so the new exhaust will go in the SAME place as the existing one? cause i was thinking IF i got mandrel bend..which i dont think i am, how can the bends be made to fit in the existing place where the exhaust goes under the chassis?

Go mandrel! The shop I got my exhaust done from charged $15 per mandrel bend and the was only like 5 bends or something. So it is easily worth the money.

I have a cheapo (not really I suppose at about $300) rice cannon muffler, with a 3" exhaust, I'll get a video clip up in the next hr or so....

Time to wake up the neighbours!
