Catastophic Engine Failure or When Good Cranks Go Bad

Finally got around to disassembling my blown engine completely.

#1 cyl on left

broken skirt

scoring on inside of piston

crank damage

again

All the connecting rod bearings that I originally replaced as well as the main bearings were all stamped with a 2003 date. Rear main seal is new and the half-shaft was only on with two bolts for whatever reason... This engine was rebuilt at one point before I got it, shame it blew up. :(

Nice work there!

How the heck did you manage that? Did you buzz the engine?
Ouch!
Just did the same thing to my engine.
How did you do yours? seized bearing?
Any sweet damage to the head?
Jesus! Seems everyone that blows up a motor on these cars always blows the #1.
poor block

IIRC its because of the position of the stock fpr, which is right next to cylinder #1. I'll double check.

Edit:

Found it

.020 over pistons too. Who are you or where did you buy this car? You changed your user name no?
Bearing failure might not have anything to do with where the FPR is located.

However I have pulled apart a SOHC FE that oil starved and seized...and guess what...the big end bearing on number 1 was the most fucked...you could have almost started the engine if it wasn't for the fact that bearing no.1 had welded itself to the crank.

I would say that the oiling is probably a little uneven, it could just be that when the engine oil starves than #1 is the closest to the oil pump and receives air instead of oil first, before the other cyls.
How can you tell they're .020 over pistons? I'll have to compare with the other set of pistons I have...

I'm just little old me. Have been since I registered, no changes in username. I bought the car from a guy that was registered here, shaker.18. He bought the car in Calgary and drove it out to NB. If the owner that rebuilt this engine was a member here and posted stuff on the car, I'd love to find it!

The bearings in cyl #1 went on me, and I replaced them all without inspecting the crank. The crank had been fubared and blew the bearings a second time. I was attempting to get the car off the road when the bearings went and the rod blew up.

Now that makes sense! I've also read about the fuel thing. But, is there any way to prevent this kind of failure? Or at least further prevent it from happening, by getting the oiling even?

I don't think the pistons are any different than stock...

stock piston on left, piston from this engine on right

piston on left measures 85mm

piston on right measures 85mm

Isn't the stock bore at 86mm.
Sounds about right. The rings make up the difference, I believe.
