What does it mean when your clutch pulsates (not much) as you hit it to change gears?

(In neutral, the clutch doesn't pulsate, if that helps at all.)

Do you mean that as you bring the pedal up, the car "shudders" until the clutch is fully engaged? Or do you mean you feel a pulsing in the pedal, even when you put little pressure on it?

If it's the former, the clutch might be due for replacement soon. Oil or grease on the friction surfaces can cause shuddering, as can a flywheel or pressure plate surface that's out of round or heat-checked. Or, if the clutch was recently replaced with a "puck" style disc you'll probably have to get used to it - that's generally how they are.

If it's the latter, you might have a clutch cover problem (diaphram spring) or a release bearing problem.

How much will this cost?
How serious is it?
