Am in the market to upgrade the ignition starting at the coil.....

I see most people using the Blaster 2 coil.
Coil Specs
Turns ratio: 100:1
Primary resistance: .7 OHMs
Secondary resistance: 4.5K OHMs
Inductance: 8 mH
Maximum voltage: 45,000 Volts
Peak current: 140 mA
Spark duration: 350 uS
Weight: N/A

Was considering the Blaster SS coil
Coil Specs
Turns ratio: 70:1
Primary resistance: .355 OHMs
Secondary resistance: 4.4K OHMs
Inductance: 6.9 mH
Maximum voltage: 40,000 Volts
Peak current: 300 mA
Spark duration: 220 uS
Weight: N/A

The SS having less voltage, but less resistance and higher peak current.

Please insert opinions now.

Thanks

my opinion - if it aint broke dont fix it

i made good power on stock ign, and others have as well. i would say your money is spent better elsewhere if you're not making more than 300whp

i have a blaster 2 and a msd 6a and its great.
I've always been curious - specifically what is *better* with a non-stock coil? Specifically what benefit are you buying? Specifically what is wrong or bad or insufficient with the stock coil? What *problem* are you solving?

I am trying to determine the same thing at the moment. Whether or not to even change out the coul for one of these aftermarket ones. If I decide to go to a aftermarket ignition then I might just have to acquire an aftermarket coil....

You get my pm btw?

K++ applied, the ONLY reason to change your ignition is to go wasted spark with a real EMS. Even then you'd just use OEM coils from something.

The stock coils are good coils, if those blaster ones are can coils, they are a down grade.

Measure a stock coil and see how it stacks up, I think you may find it favorable.

Fred.
WHen tuning my car on MS i noticed some breaking up in the 5200+ rpm range. I just put new plugs, wires, cap and rotor on. So I bought a blaster SS coil, installed it and had the same break-up occuring at about 3200rpm. I had to change my dwell to 5.8 ms I think to get it to pull to 6200rpm with no problems. Anyone think this is an indication of an inferior coil compared to stock? I'd be a little pissed if I spent $40 on an inferior POS whe I have 2 good stock coils at home. It's been eating at me for awhile now...
There is a good example
Anyone else have opinios/experience with this? I'm 99.8% sure that I'm going back to the stock coil because that dwell seems crazy.
Many of the Blaster coils are meant for a CDI ignition like the MSD boxes, and don't perform as well when hooked to a stock ignition.

So the consensus is that I am better off being mad for a few minutes for buying the MSD coil, putting my stock coil back in and drop my dwell 2-3ms? Sorry, don't mean to be a threadjacker, but this has been killing me.

Try it and see. You can always sell the coil, it probably still looks like new.

Another example of a wrong assumption that aftermarket parts are always better than stock.

I gather you are speaking of the post hijacker SiFlyBy.

Well even my wording suggested that my mentality was, that it was an upgrade. I was leaning towards the stock coil as the posts I have research and the comments here suggest up to 300 hp is attainable on stock.

I think Zlyricist did it all on stock.

hmmmm.
indeed i did. 298whp, stock ignition, stock plug gap

ryan dillon is doing it too, at ~270hp

I'm going to. I'm sure I would have been alright setting the dwell a little higher(3-3.5ms) with the stock coil. I *might* hit 300 hp, doubt it though.

Zlyricist, is there a thread where I can see your mods list at your peak?
