What might be the problem if:
after several miles on the hwy, then, slowing to a stop, the temporature on my gauge moves past the mid-range approaching hot, then, it goes back down...but a little higher than normal (the car does not overheat). Any thoughts?

- The air flow should be fine (K&N stock replacement filter), coolant level is fine, fans work, and I had my thermostat replaced about 3 months ago to see if it would fix it. -
 THANKS for your help!

I've only seen my car head for hot and jump back down on one occasion. It did it three or so times in a row. This was due to the water pump being on the way out and leaking. Once I filled the coolant, it was OK again.

I got a few thousand kms more before the pump stopped.

Water pump, I'd guess...check around for leaks.

i have similar problem...it goes over just a little bit, you can't even notice it sometimes...and than sometimes stays under the half, again, just a little bit. I have 175K km on it, and the pump was changed at 113K km. T-stat was changed, i can't think of anything else. I will have it flushed soon, but Stage36 (i think that's his nick) thinks it might be my coolant temp sensor (we determined this on the topic i posted about this problem) I haven't changed the temp sensor, but am thinkin' about it. We'll see what happens!

Before you assume water pump make sure the belt is tight. If the pump isn't turning it won't be of any use. That's really a long shot though. I too think your pump has probably seen better days. I'd replace it ASAP if needed. Running hot is never good. Just ask my old engine..... :sigh:
