There a kid that i want to race, he has a '92 ford escort with the 1.8 in it, he also has a intake system, a racing clutch, and a euro exhaust. he says his car will put my '93 mx6, v6 5spd stock other then a euro pipe, to shame. I have seen his car in action and it sound like a lawn mower, watch out for the weed waker. @- . so what do u think should i run him or will he take me.lol

Those escorts with 1.8 only have 127hp, w/ 114lb/trq

You have a 2.5 V6, 165hp, w/ 160lb/trq.

I think that you should be able to take him even if you have a bad clutch.(how bad is it?)

But what kind of racing clutch does he have? Might make all the difference in the world.

NGK are the best for mazdas. 7mm or 8.5mm your choice.

Will it make a difference in performance, from 7-8.5?

not really... but it will affect your gas mileage.

Plugs and wires don't do much at all without some type of ignition system. You might see a .5-1hp gain... hardly worth the cost.

If you are bad enough to make fun of him, then you should be able to beat him as is. Trust me when I say as long as that 1.8 is not the Mazda 1.8T bpt engine, then you are fine.

I'd say if you are worried about it, then get a new clutch and lightened flywheel. With intake/exhaust work, that will net you LOW 15s to high 14s if you are a good driver.

Good luck man

p.s. Who calls it euro exhaust? I guess that is a northern thing.

HAHA...I have never heard it called that either. Yes you better be careful with some of those Escorts. Especially the GT's. Also, like Aggied said, there is a drop in BPT Mazda 323 engine that would be killer in an escort. Better watch out.

when i had my stock rs, this older escort (maybe late 80's) wanted to race me, i had 3 friends in the car, he had a really ricey sounding exhaust and i doubt much of anything else other than a wing, we were pretty even with me maybe slightly pulling until we came up to traffic....but this one must be atleast a little faster if we are discussing it racing an ls

just look under the hood to make sure there isn't a turbo sitting in there. for the 1.8's, the motor swap isn't needed, just the manifold/turbo. but if you say his exhaust is high pitched and nasty, then it's probably not a turbo. turbo motors usually produce a nice deep tone.

I have NEVER lost to an Escort... Never raced one with a turbo though... Didn't know you could do that. Ill be on the lookout from now on.:(
You would be surprised at what you can do with an Escort ;) :D

If he has only the mods you listed, then you should be ok in terms of beating him. Although, I have seen a NA BP Escort go 15.5 with minimal mods, it should be close. They are nothing to scoff at, the 1.8BP is a great engine to toy with!

Only one way to find out though!! Let us know and be safe!

That time came from a car with a bit of extra timing, intake and exhaust. Sure it is not fast by any means, but on the same token, hardly any modification at all. Out of curiosity, what would a 6 run with the same mods?? I am not being a smartass, but I am curious.

A BPT Escort will run you a low 13 second 1/4 with a good set of tires and boost controller. I will be back here to report what a KLZE Escort runs in a few weeks.

Like I said, nothing to scoff at, and not much work involved (BPT is a direct swap). Now how easy is it to get a 6 into the low 13's??

Well, thats where most of us started off. And I highly doubt you are more than a second less than that without FI/N20. I mean, yeah its an Escort but the BP engine is fairly peppy n/a, and I've seen both an escort and fesitiva turbo'd more than likely with the afforementioned swap, and they were both running 13s all night at the track. I don't think thats bad at all.

Suddenly I feel that my car is terribly inadequate. 13's in an escort, did hell freeze over, WOW! thats something else. I would love to see that thing go. I'm am dead serious, I want to race in that just to see the look on peoples faces:eek:! Time to turbo the 6, my goal. To stay together.
