Hi all,

I haven't posted here for quite a while. My MX-6 has been sitting for about 2 years now, un-inspected, since it needs a few things, among them are new exhaust and new tires.

My question is, does anyone (other than Mazda, but even that I'm not sure about) make factory-type, bolt-on exhaust for the 1st gen MX-6 and Probe anymore? I want to get this car back on the road, at least somewhat but I don't want to have to spend mega-$$$ on a custom exhaust system for it. With 6 other cars, I have to pick and choose what I do and at least to get it drive-able again, I want something inexpensive. I've checked on the Walker and Bosal web sites and they do list part numbers for all parts from the down pipe on back, but I've looked on Rockauto, Advance, Autozone, etc. and other than the converter and maybe the muffler, none of the other parts seem to be available. I've even looked on e-bay but exhaust parts (especially the mid-pipes) seem to be scarce for these cars. I know that mandrelexhaustsystems.com makes the mid-pipes for them, but they would involve welding for hangers and I just don't have the $$$ to acquire all of the parts needed PLUS pay a shop to install it for me. I just spent $500 to replace the exhaust on my wife's Outback, but everything was bolt-on and I was able to get everything from the cats on back for it. Sure it may not last as long as Subaru parts, but new converter prices are astronomical from Subaru and for a 18 year old car it's not worth paying Subaru prices.

Anyway, I didn't mean to get off track but unless someone knows of a place that sells bolt-on exhaust parts for my MX-6, I'll either have to keep trying to patch it up with spit and band-aids or the car will just need to sit and collect dust even longer.

Thanks in advance.

I may be wrong, (probably) you are looking for an entire exhaust system from manifold to tip? Have you tried going to junkyards and getting everything except the cat. (dont think they would sell you those; ive been to some that used to)

Right now, I would settle for everything everything from the cat-back. The downpipe seems to be okay and I can get a direct-fit cat new, those are available. It's just the 2 center pipes and the muffler that seem to be hard to locate. I've seen new mufflers on e-bay (single outlet only though), but the muffler is useless to me without the 2 center pipes. Those are rusted through pretty good.

As far as junkyards, these cars - both MX-6 and Probe - are pretty rare to begin with (especially the GT's) and don't show up that often, at least around my neck of the woods. My brother goes with his friend a lot and is always on the lookout for them, but has never seen any.

Thanks for the advice though, I appreciate it.

I know what you mean. It took me months before I was able to find a GT in the junkyard. As soon as I found out I went and pulled the entire rear sub frame. (Did a drum to disc conversion :grin2:) Here in Colorado there is some junkyards that post their inventory so that you won't make a useless trip. They have them in different states as well you should check them out. It is a U-Pull & Pay.

As for me, after the cat on my car it does straight to a glass pack and thats it. I removed the muffler and it sounds way better. :smile2:

You are looking for hen's teeth ... in another post about exhaust I mentioned Borla USED to make an exhaust for 1st gen GT. They stopped doing so; but they were always good about describing their product for the buyer. On that note, they may have archival info as a matter of history keeping. Just a thought. You might contact them for some kind of lead for a current vendor.
