FE3 Turbo Extractors

Helloa

Quick question

I am putting a turbo on a FE3 and just looking for manifold options.

Will b6t or bpt extractors fit? A friend of a friend of a friend said that one of the two fits just with slight modification to one or two of the flange holes that mount the manifold to the head. Can anyone confirm this if so it would make the build significantly easier than custom as there are allot of b6 and bp aftermarket turbo options available as i'm sure you all know.

Cheers

Short answer: No
Long answer: Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....

You can file the holes oblong enough to fit the bolts, but it will never sit twice the same way, and the ports are both too small and wrongly spaced. When I bought my car it had the turbo installation done this way, and getting rid of the BPT-based exhaust was the first thing to do. The ports for cyl #1 and #4 only had about 10x20mm of passage, all the rest was blasted against the flange. So no, don't do it, go for the extra mile and do the exhaust properly.
You can adapt an Evo 4-9 ex manifold to fit...but as with the BPT the bolt holes dont line up and there is a mismatch on the ports, but its no where near as bad as the BPT.

I have an EVO manifold with an adapter plate welded to it....I'll see if I can post up some pics...I was originally going to make a bolted adapter plate (cos I want to make my engine look stock with heat shields and everything) but Jesiotrot bought a project FE3 engine and sold me the manifold with the adapter plate already welded on.

With a RWD setup you may find that the EVO1-3 is a better option (if you go this way) purely as the turbo will sit between cyls 1&2 using an EVO1-3 manifold and cyls 3&4 on the EVO4-9....as the EVO 1-3 the engine sits on the LH side of the car. exhaust pattern is the same AFAIK.

On the FWD you want the turbo nearer the back of the engine for space reasons.
I'm running one on my Mx5/Miata now. It's an SS Autochrome tubular (large-ish head flange). Some of the stud holes where altered and others redrilled. The ports on 1 & 4 were widened a bit to fit the FE3 ports. It's not ideal but it works. BoostedRafi has done the same thing with a long manifold for a B. Mine wasn't anything like STW describes- not much porting was needed. The stud holes were the hard work.

There is pics of it in my photobucket account, the port holes line up nicely -

I'll upload some better pics of how good they line up.

Mean cheers for the advice fullas, much appreciated.

eek that doesn't sound ideal at all!!!
Ok, so a few options there, The best one I'm guessing would be to use Fred's DWG and have that cut and get a price for a custom one or weld the flange onto an evo manifold. The BP option sounds rather restrictive of flow and i would imagine it would mess with the balancing of the engine.

Fixed, also, see a shrink, you have an addiction ;-)

Fred.
Addiction? Maybe :p

So long as they keep rolling in with turbo exhaust manifolds i'll be right!

And Fred, there was an F8 at pick-a-part the other day, I seriously considered gettin it so I could make an NA motor for my 323 lol
turbo jesse turbo...
i almost wana grab it coz its different.
nah dont feel like going back to n/a also cant be bothered pulling a motor from a wrecker.
Lazy...,.

dont forget that the F8 DOHC is easily converted to 2.0....and just as easily stroked to 2.2....

what's that FE3 sitting in?
Maybe an Escort?
Yip. Mk1 2 door Escort. Just fitted up the mounts today and checked the fit of the cosmo gearbox. All seams pretty simple.
I knew it was an escort what year 70 's?
got a web site or more pics of the project? sounds cool :D
1969 mk1 2door ford escort.

Fitted the engine properly over the weekend, clears the steaing rack by 10mm max and the bonnet by 10mm so she is a tight fit.
have almost fitted the gearbox crossmember it should be fairly straight forward just ran out off steel.

Mk1mad has almost finnished modding the gearbox tunnel as i got a bit grinder happy on the thing and made a big hole to the side of it.

Radiator and shroud fitted. next hold up is money!! so much to buy.

intercoller, extractors, turbo, computer, injectors ... thats just the tip of a bit iceburg

Am i allowed to start a jroject thread on here? i will have one on;

Oldschool.co.nz but keen for one on here so you guys who know these engines can let me know were im going wrong etc.

Definitely! They are encouraged :)

I can't believe I only just added 2 and 2 and realised who you were. Yes it should have been obvious, but I'm tired.

This should be a very sweet project :) And as a bonus, I'll get to see it one day with a bit of luck! Probably at Taupo ;-)
