I have completed the almighty mtx conversion. One prob. I know you have to fill the mtx by removing the speedometer driven gear. I just want to know if any of you have some tips for me. I broke hte tab off and it will not come out. Dont worry...i have a spare sitting in the garage. I just need to get this one out. any ideas? Thanks guys and gals. :)

heh i did the same thing when i replaced the drive axle, any way to remove the gear just grab it with a vise grip and twist it side to side while lifting up a bit it should pop out. and as for the filling of it just use a funnal and a tube to reach. most tranny fluid bottles are shaped so that if you remove the air intake stuff it can reach down into the hole. if i can help any more with this just PM me. good luck

I've filled mine from underneath and from above and must say its easiest to take the gear out from below and fill it from above. If you get one of the long long bendy funnels for like $1 you can easily put it in the speedo hole from above and fill away.

If the threads on the speedo gear are intact, you can thread the base of the cable back onto the gear and use that to pull on. (Don't pull on the cable itself; pull on the metal threaded base of the cable that attaches to the speedo gear.)

Also, you can check the gear oil level from above. The manual recommends that you do it on level ground. With the car parked on level ground, you can reach your arm around the back of the intake manifold and get a ratchet down there to loosen the 10mm bolt and then pull the gear up and out. No need to jack the car up.

I've never actually had to remove the driven gear, but a magnet probe may work? I use my 3 foot retractable one for all sorts of good stuff.

the driven gear itself is plastic, it is attached to a metal bracket with a 10 millimeter screw next to it, it sounds to me like you havent taken that screw out and are just pulling on what you think might come out? the whole piece comes out, but then agin you said you have a spare....so that can't be?...ummm? try this...try prying the bracket out with a small flat screw driver(prying UP is what I meant)...also try instead of pulling, try a twisting motion...see if you can get it to budge, and if you can, try a twisting upwards motion...like a tornado...it should come out. I also found that the harder I tried, the more stubborn it became. MY Ex GF once told me while baking chocolate chip cookies..."here let me put the dough on the cookie sheet....I have a smaller hand and a gentler touch"...I didnt understand what exactly she meant untill the cookies came out and mine were frumpy and globs of bulky cookie (just the way I like em}) ) and hers came out looking like they came from a package:mad: ....what I;m trying to say is.....don't try so hard, it might come out with the smallest effort, and you are actually working against yourself

you actually made sense 6 lol. umm...yeah, ive removed the screw. Then the tab broke off  THEN the threads broke off.....i can wear it around my finger  I even just took one of those wrench heads that you put a ratchet in and stuck it on...just slipped off. Tried vise grips for about 2 hours. Ill try prying again. On what little is left. Your right though, im putting too much effort into it.

I had the same exact problem as you do now when I bought my GT. The speedo gear was stuck in the tranny, with the tab and the threads broken off. I was able to remove the speedo gear by attaching a drill chuck (tightened very tight) to the speedo gear shaft and then attaching a long bolt and a slide hammer weight to the drill chuck to make a slide hammer. This worked quite well; just make sure the drill chuck is on tight or it will slide off.

mazdaman what did you do with the wires that hooked up to the atx shifter? do they have a purpose to something other then the atx shifter?

No, it doesnt.. i did the ATX-MTX swap, and i just pulled the whole thing out. Its only hooked up to the shifter, and to the ATX tranny [and neutral safety switch.. which if you did it right, you could have bypassed.. i still have mine sitting in the engine bay in park lol... im lazy.]. Just pull it through the firewall and it will come right out.

Edit: your not talking about the shifting cable.. oops lol.. i dont think i did anything with the wires either... arent there.. 2 plugs? i dont really remember..

ruff ryder....those wires went just to the shifter. Mine are still under the console unplugged. But do like sevenx7x suggests.
Take the electronic piece off your atx where the shift "linkage" goes. and hook up the only 2 wires that are on it. Make sure the plastic circle piece (that slid over the gear selector) is in the park position. I had a problem wiht mine though....i had to put it in nuetral. But yeah....one connector was for the light to illuminate what gear you are in....and the other is for the hold function. Hope this helped.

ive found it easier to try to get the speedo gear housing to twist a bit first, this usually helps me to get the gear out, also you'll need to be able to twist it a little when going back in to get the teeth to line up, all that is holding it in after the 10 mm bolt is a rubber o-ring. good luck on it.

actually, you could just turn the inside part where the cable goes into, to line the teeth up while slippin the gear back in. 1 quick question....would the atx speedo gear read acuratly in the mtx?
im in an argument with a friend......i believe it will work fine and read just like the mtx would.
