how many of you turbo guys have gone down the flutter path?

from what ive seen, it seems as though 1st gen owners are more inclined to go for a blow off valve.. which IMO is fair enough.

when i first got my blitz BOV (which i have since given away) i thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. I would BOV pedestrians, cars with windows open, cars with windows closed (if i was bored) and even birds on the road..

when i got rid of my bov (and added the t28 and the rest) i got my friend to drive my car for me while i stood on the side of the road (so i can hear it).. i must say, hearing the turbo spool up, wastegate scream, and then finally a swift flutter really got to me... im never going to go back to PSHHH!

sometime this week im getting a new dump pipe made up and im hoping it will make my flutter louder. (well it bloody should, my current one is leaking and my car is sounding like a tractor)..

what are other ways i can make it louder? 'that mx6 with the wrx front bar' has insanely loud flutter for a 1st gen, due to having the AFM b/w the turbo and tb, but i dont wanna do that..

i guess what i really need to do is aftermarket ECU so i can go MAP sensor.

any thoughts and suggestions guys?

hahaha..yet another quote of the week:

and yes i do have a BOV simply cause the flutter is too damn soft hehe

p.s. BOV is better than sliced bread in my opinion ;)

ducktape, its funny cause its true!.. i was the biggest BOV whore, even though it wasnt loud at all.

i dont really find myself 'fluttering people' as much as a BOV'd them.. but i do make an effort to flutter the kids at the bus stop every morning on my way to work (just because half the time it makes them suffer from whiplash!)

so, who has what here? i should have made a poll.. i might do so when i get home.. im guessing im gonna be right when i say that almost all modded 1st gens have gone PSHHH over flutter.

i think ive only ever come across two other 1st gens (black_tx5 used to, and dr4g0n) who chose flutter.

Futter is beast i always wanted a bov but never got one then since i have had the massive garrett turbo, massive exaust system and still left the standard bypass valve but it is venting to atmosphere now, All i have is flutter and it sounds so much better then PSHHH!

Im with XsKaPe on this one. I had a Blitz BOV on my car and it was insanely loud, but just recently removed it and put back the old plumb-back. I like the fluttering noise, it sounds unique and tuff IMO

Gotta love scaring those birds :D

anyway..i put the foot down..as soon as they heard the spoooool, they got scared and jumped off the road rofl
then was the PSSSHHHHHT..what a neckbreaker hahaha

I have flutter only because I have the factory Bypass blocked due to it leaking.
Am planning to get a turbosmart or similar plumback soon, dont want to risk the health of the turbo too much.

so what damage could be caused from venting the factory bypass into the atomosphere instead of back into the intake ???? and whats this flutter ???

With a stock setup you will run really rich on gear changes or when ever you boost and back off, whats flutter?? **** man i dont know how to explain that you must of hear it on other cars before. instead of a crisp clean PSSSHHHHHT it is just air fluttering. i give up explaing now......

flutter is the sound caused by air going backwards through the turbo.. it is so much more cooler and tougher than a PSSHH.. its usually a tzzuuu tzuu tzuu..

the actual sound varies alot, and unlike a BOV, it isnt really something that can be replicated electronically.

i guess the closest thing to flutter is the sound a pigeon makes, either flapping its wings or making that sound they make..

I have a HKS SSQ bov and it was a high peeewwwww sound (i dont know how you guys are going to figure that one out) but i have had my pipe of the the top of the turbo (the one with the stock bov in the middle) to the intercooler replaced with a steel one from exotic exhaust and now by hks flutters it arse off course they removed the stock bov and plugged it up. ITS AWESOME. If you have a hks or any good bov get the stock removed and you will be surprised how the sounds changes.

Cheers

Compressor surge is really bad....mkay.

compressor surge is caused by the BOV not opening properly on closed throttle because you've farked up the spring setting. It's not tuff, it's bad.
If you think slowing down your turbo between shifts, by pushing air back through it, is a good thing you're retarded.

Can anyone say "LAG"?

Do you actually know why turbos have BOV's or BPV's?? If you said "duh, because it makes a cooool noise" slap yourself in the head......no, harder. You want the compressor to keep spining as fast as possible during closed throttle shifts to reduce lag when you press the loud pedal.

I feel just a little bit dumber after reading this thread.

LAG!!! Yea, you would get a fair bit not to mention stuff your turbo :) But I have a V-Port BOV right up next to the TB so it is loud as hell in the passenger seat })

Ouch, that hurt! Nah seriously, I agree with everything, but if they want to fark their turbo's who am I to stop them ???

in all honesty, i havent noticed a difference with my blow off valve on (turbosmart type 2) or with flutter. infact, i get better fuel economy without the bov. not too mention it doesnt back fire everytime i back off the throttle.

in regards to lag, i get more with a bov. think about it like this, u lose almost all of the boost in ur intercooler pipes when u are at wot and change gears. this means the turbo has to fill up the intercooler pipes with boost again. when i dont run a bov, there is just a slight noise between gear changes, and it is straight back into the boost range again. almost no lag at all. trust me, i used to be a big bov fan, and thought that running without one was stupid, but after doing alot of personal tests, i noticed that a bov is detrimental to performance. it does nothing but scare pedestrians.

if u interested in running an aftermarket valve, plumback would be the way to go.

and the reason why turbos have bpv's or bov's is because the sierra cosworths kept snapping the compressor wheels off the turbo at bathurst. these things were running 40+psi, and the development of the bov was born. so i dont think a street car running 12psi would suffer too much from it.

one other thing....running a blow off valve is totally illegal, flutter is not.

Ok, picture this. Approaching a corner , down into 2nd, throttle closed, pressure in intercooler and pipes now equalized with atmosphere be spinning your turbo backwards to escape, wot .........LAG. The term "Compressor surge" doesn't even sound like a good thing, and it isn't.

I don't use a BOV, as I think a BPV works better on our system. But no, they are not illegal. You will only get stung if it is over a set db level. That is straight from a vehicle inspector's mouth at DoT in Logan last wednesday.

Acually BOV's are illegal because they are venting unfiltered air from an engine. but so many people have it they just let it go but if a cop or rta officer wanted to they could defect you for a BOV. I have so many friends that do not run BOV's or BPV's because of the low PSI it wont harm the turbo.
I have the standard BPV but it is venting to atmosphere because im running a haltech with larger injectors bigger fuel pump 450Hp custom garrett turbo massive exaust manifold and exaust and it flutters big time and i asked garrett, cooma desiel my machanic about this and unless i am running 20 - 40 PSI it wont harm the turbo at all plus it is ball bearing so there is very little lag at the best of times i can turn the car off and you can hear the turbo spinning down for like 10 min. :D
