Hey all, starting to think about some creature comfort upgrades and I'd really like to upgrade the stereo and bring it into the 2020's. I don't want to mess with fiberglass but still want a touch screen, so I was thinking of getting a single din with a floating screen. My question, for those of you who have replaced your headunit, is it possible to swap the headunit single din spot and the open cubby above the ashtray/lighter?

So stock is:
Climate controls
Radio
Cubby
Ashtray

I'd like to do:
Climate controls
Cubby
Radio
Ashtray

Thoughts? Without taking it apart, it looks like a single din would fit there and I'd have plenty of room for a 7" or even 9" screen (would just do 7 since it's a manual).

No, just relocating the empty Cubby (where I think a CD player upgrade may have gone) to where the radio is and vice versa. Just so the screen doesn't cover the climate controls.

I don't understand your plan, without cutting some of the plastic, there isn't going to be one big open space that is 7 or 9".
