This is cross-posted to Clubprotege for those of you that frequent both...

I guess this would be more directed to the Aussie/NZ guys as y'all seem to have more experience with BG chassis cars, heh.

I have a 95 Escort GT that has fallen victim to the rusties, looking for something to plop the BP drivetrain into. Was thinking of being adventurous and sticking in an MX-6, but trying to find one around here that's in any shape worth saving is rather difficult. I managed to find a 92 Protege near(ish)by with no trans so I might grab that.

What I'm wondering is this:
BG guys like to swap out the fifth gear from their trans to a 0.717 final gear that they usually grab from 2G MX-6's with a 2.0, Kia Sephias and later model Escort LXs... Now, I found a thread on here that mentions that the G-series box on N/A 1G's have a 0.717 final gear... So I'm wondering if I could swap that over from my spare trans? I would just change the bell housing and use the MX-6 trans but the speedometer gear melted in it so I'd rather not use that trans if I can avoid it.

Also, the clutch in the Escort is slipping... the clutch from my parts car is still good and I thought I might be able to use it on the BP if it would work. Does anyone know if it would?

What is the ratio of 5th in the BG? Are they doing it for strength or just the change in drive ratio?

Awesome, thanks chief tool!

According to what I found on Clubprotege, the fifth gear ratio in the BP G-series box is 0.790.

About the whole G-series thing, what is the difference between the G5M-R (in MX-6) and the G25M-R (in EGT)?

Fith gear and final gear are entirely different. The final drive gear set is like the rear diff set in a RWD car, all other gears in the trans go through it so changing the final changes the effective ratio of the entire gear set.

The case, mainly the bellhousing side but the center section is supposed to differ also.

The gear sets obviously and some other running changes that I'm not familiar with.

Oh, oops, pardon my booboo there. I've always been too scared to mess with transmission internals but this swap only involves the portion accessible from the rear cover. I'll get my feet wet a little at a time...
