Hey guys, as some of you know, I'm selling my 93 MX-6 LS cause I just bought a newer one. I was told that I may be better off selling this thing in parts since the mileage is high... Do you think this is a good idea? Its the fully loaded 93 LS model with a new transmission. Could I sell off all the parts, old and new, and make at least 2K?

Parting it out has its advantages and disadvatages. You can earn more money by parting it out definitely. However it will take time before you see past the $2000 that you are looking for. It may be a headache to ship out parts and there may be unwanted leftovers for you to dispose of. Since our cars are no longer in production their parts are that much more valuable if in good shape. Since you just bought yourself a newer one you yourself may be able to source some parts from your this mx6 (should you ever need it) and learn its internals in the process. Consider it. Do you have the space to keep it lying around unregistered? Would it be a problem for you to dismantle it by yourself? Do you have the time to advertise and ship the pieces as well as respond to interested parties? If these things are major problems than sell it as a whole otherwise you may just lose out on cash. But ... you do see how hungry for parts some of the members in here are.

Riceater6, I have two people interested in buying it, if its not sold by next weekend, the doors are yous :) They're black with black leather trimming, keep in mind that this car has high miles, so the parts are not in perfect condition. But with a little work they could be polished up and fixed. For the most part they look decent. - Later

Seems like I'm the only one that's gonna say don't part it out. I have an old MG, and it depresses me to see perfectly-running cars being parted out. MX-6s are rare enough as it is, having one less rare car on the road isn't a good idea in my mind.

I regularly go to (used car dealer) auctions. Last night I saw a 91 MX-6 4 cyl automatic in good condition. with over 100000 miles go for almost $3000 (this is wholesale, remember). I've seen 2nd gen MX-6s in badly beat-up condition go for $2000. So the car still has some value on both the wholesale and retail market if the price is right and it looks good.

I have 105K on my 95 and it's still going strong. How many miles are on the car in question? Surely they're good for 200000 miles or more.

Yeah, I had it on ebay before christmas, but I took it down cause I had to go on vacation and wouldn't be back to respond to a winning bidder. I'm fixing to post it again once I decide what I'm going to do with it.

I'd say definitely don't part it out. It looks as good as mine or better, and has twice as many miles on it!

A drivetrain with that many miles on it will not be worth much on the used market other than as a core, even if it's in excellent running condition and is possibly good for 50000-100000 more miles.

Like another poster said, you'd have a lot of headache dealing with shipping car parts everywhere, but maybe it's not an issue for some people.

Definitely give it a go trying to sell it whole. If you're located near MS, I'll be happy to find out about helping you wholesale it.

Well if you decide to part it out I might be interested in a couple of things like the whole ENGINE. I want to build one from the bottom up and then install it into mine, tranny and all. Give me a price, and where do you live?

Actually, I JUST had the transmission completely rebuilt from the ground up. The complete overhaul cost around $2000, its good for another 200,000 the mechanic said, and comes with a warranty, of course the warranty wouldn't be good still if it were taken out, but the tranny hasn't even had 100 miles on it since, and its nice to know the mechanic would back it up. So I could sell that alone for around $1200 easy. Like I said, it would be a great vehicle to fix up, which is why I dont know if I want to part it out.
