If your 5th gear keeps on popping out under a heavy load, this is your problem! You dont need a new tranny, in most cases anyway.

Part Number: H501-17-406
Price: Cheaper than I expected, only $49.60

Very easy and straight forward to change. The 5th gear pan is located right in the drivers die wheel well.

Tools Needed:
21mm socket to get the wheel off, its easier with it off.
23mm to drain the transmission
10mm for the speedo cable and all the bolts on the 5th gear pan
1" socket to remove a nut overlapping the fork.
1½" socket to remove the nut holding the shift fork in place.
Hammer and point to remove roll pin.

Dont forget to put some fluid back in!

Uploaded a few pics of the differences between the new and the old shift fork:

The new one.

You can see the groove that is worn out on the old shift fork.

Comparison of the two.

The new fork held 5th gear then it began popping out again :( I'm guessing the shaft is warped internally. Looks like I need a rebuild......

I had the same problem with 5th. I replaced the change hub outer (it wasn't actually too bad, but i'd bought one expecting the worse), the 5th gear (mazda call it the "over the top" gear, lol.) and of course the two new nuts, the keys and clips. The outside row of dog teeth were totally gone. Since that was fixed it's never popped 5th.

BTW. I swapped back to ATX fluid. Last fluid change I used a GL5 mtx oil and the shifts were quite notchy compared to what I was like use to. Now, back with the ATX juice it's silky smooth again.

Just noticed this is part # section, I'll see if I still have my invoice tonight.
