Hi Guys,

I consider myself a Mid-Atlantic citizen as I spend a lot of my life "Crossing the Pond ".

As some of you know my best female friend in the USA is Claire who lives in Wisconsin.

She has a great car an '83 Toyota Celica Supra

and this as her main car

a '93 Ford Taurus

We are two people divided by a common language and although she is in many respects an anglophile, our sense of humour often falls dead on her.

Then I have to explain the joke in detail and she say's "Oh OK" and sort of smiles.

G' rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!

But when you guys spell the Queen's English wrong then it's no surprise ....:ewink:

Humor insted of humour
Aluminum instead of Aluminium
Color instead of colour
Center instead of centre

and so on !!

Have a nice day

Paula

PS. When Claire arrived back from her summer trip to the UK this year, I could understand every word she said but now her broad Wisconsin accent is coming back and the end of her sentences are slurred again !!!

Ditto everything Paula said plus I have a 1997 MX-6 which in the UK is ODBI not ODBII but at the same time it isn't the same as the older ones, therefore you guys have less info about my car than other english folk.
We like having a little section compare to the others as it's more a community than in larger clubs. I've been in larger clubs before and they were no where near as friendly as this one.
I'm going to Australia in less then a month so when I get some free time I'll pop on the Australian section. The more I learn about America the more I see how surprisingly different the culture is!
Canadians and Australians are most like us original English speakers.
I have to go to work now so maybe I'll add more later.

Whoops !!!

Dave, that should get the ball rolling .......:jump:

Paula ;)

Yawn...................how boring.

Should spice things up by having a proper fight like having the British army take on the American army. Oh I forget that already happens on a regular basis, usually ending in British casualties, its called friendly fire.

We have queens in the USA too. They hang out near department stores, wear tight shirts and pants, and say "Haaayyyy" all the time.

Well I guarantee its not different enough that we couldn't help 98% of the time. For that 2% of the time if the UK members actually ventured out of the their hole in the forum they would see your thread in the 2nd gen general forum and answer it there instead of in the hole.

This is board has a very small number of truly active members. I would guess that the number of active UK members is probably about half the size of really active US members. All of us our very friendly. A lot of active members don't even currently have sixes, the community here is just that strong.

Whats going to really shock you is if you ever come over the pond and see how surprisingly different culture is across the different states in the US. We have over 300 million people spread across an area almost 2.5 times as large as Europe. It always amusing to me how Brits will go on about subtle cultural differences between their towns 30 Miles apart, but Americans are just Americans. I drive 250 miles across one state just to visit my family and we talk about subtle cultural differences just within our state. We have 50 of them.

Last thing don't be angry when Americans think that all of you are from London. (of course we know your not) you have to understand a bit about general American culture. We are so large and there can be quite the cultural difference even within the same state that a lot of people identify themselves with the closest largest city. For many people those cities can be fairly great distances from where they actually live. I can't tell you the number of people I've met from "Chicago" that actually live 2 hours and a hundred miles from it.

Should spice things up by having a proper fight like having the British army take on the American army. Oh I forget that already happens on a regular basis, usually ending in British casualties, its called friendly fire.
Then start wearing your red coats again so we have an easier time telling you guys apart.

Well.....it was only a matter of time before I showed up here wasn't it? Anyone who visits the UK side will know I'm the most argumentative git on there.

There's two reasons we like having the US side of the site around - cheap parts for sale, and Megasquirt. The rest of the text on most sections is what we Brits call 'Chaff'.

That's my two pence worth. Goodbye, you are the weakest link America.

Ben.

I was just about to tell you all why I would never want to visit the states (which is true) but then realised I am full of alcohol and as such i wouldnt be able to react in an adult manner to the responce. So one thing we do have in common were all dicks when pissed (drunk)!!!

I e-mailed an ex when drunk and that was bad, so lesson learned lol. (especially as I've been married over 20 years) lol

You guys winge about fuel increases when your fuel costs literally a third what ours costs! And your insurance is insanely cheaper than ours too!
This year my insurance for the lightly modified 6 was $1960! And until I reached 21 no insurance company would even insure me on it as it's in insurance group 16 (out of 20). You guys seriously have it easy. Everything costs less in the USA, there's a reason it's called 'rip off britain'. Everything has a 15% tax on it (was 17.5% but they temporarily reduced it due to the recession) and our earnings are taxed too but it's graded. The first £6,475 is free then it's 10% on the next £2,440, then 20% if you earn up to £37,400 and 40% over that. As far as I know that's how it goes, see here for more accurate info.
It's crazy that your states have different laws and taxes, etc. It's like they're all different countries.
From what I've seen though you're a pretty close minded lot. Just watch Borat and Bruno to see how you treat outsiders.

Robert

p.s. That's all for arguments sake, I'm a nice guy really. I just barely have enough time to check the UK section, the seperate UK site and the General Mazda site let alone the full international lot.

And how far do you need to go to get to school work/everyday? I used to drive 20 miles each way to work, and no there was no public transportation to get there. Thats a fairly mild commute as far as Americans go to. Again we are 2.5 times the size of europe and europe has a population thats just over twice as large as the US. Were a lot more spread out and absolutely NEED to drive more then you guys. Its something I don't think you can fully understand until you've visited. So yes your gas is really expensive, but its taxed to high hell to encourage alternate transportation correct?

get back to me about that after you pay for your own health care.

Yep.

Please don't tell me you base your opinion of Americans based on this MOVIE, whose sole intention was shock value. You understand that Americans find these movies and the people in them absolutely obnoxious too right? Were laughing along same as you. I bet I could find some equally ignorant people in the UK if I was getting paid to capture them on film.

p.s. That's all for arguments sake, I'm a nice guy really. I just barely have enough time to check the UK section, the seperate UK site and the General Mazda site let alone the full international lot.
General mazda site? people use that? You also seem to think that we want you to venture out to all the seperate local forums. we don't. We just want you to join in the general forums. On this side of the pond we treat the local forums as strictly a place to handle local events meets. General bullshit and all technical question belong in the lounge and tech forums respectively. We don't create vast amounts of duplicate information in each local section and refuse to budge out of them. You guys seem to think each local group hangs out solely in there respective local forums. They don't. In fact the UK forum and the Australia forums are really the only local forums that see much use at all. The difference being the Aus guys will join in and play with the rest of the group, while you UK wussies sit behind your wall and bitch and moan about the 3 or 4 minor difference between our cars and yours and how we couldn't possibly understand.
Get over yourselves.

MM2587 - You are officially a tool.

1) I currently drive 25 miles each way to get to work - and I do it in my 6 as well, I spend on average £90-100 PER WEEK on fuel.

2) I used to commute to work for 2 hours each way, at 100 miles each journey, EVERY day. Yes we might be a small country, but that means absolutely DICK ALL in terms of how far you have to drive. Plus our roads are crappier than yours, and we have more drives on the road. It's like a raceway people drive that fast over here.

3) We do pay for our own healthcare. We have VAT on all purchases, we have high income tax (not as bad as yours I think), we have taxes all over the place. These taxes are spread out, and they pay for our health care. Just because we don't get buttfrakked by scumbag insurance companies we get told we are socialist scum? PLEASE, GIVE ME STRENGTH. Read a book, just do something to learn a little about the world beyond your borders.

4) If Americans aren't ignorant, why did they vote in George Bush as their president? If Americans aren't ignorant, why did they let their own government kill thousands of people on 9/11? If the Americans aren't ignorant, why do you let scumbag religious fanatics like the Mormons and JW's ruin peoples lives? I can go on....

I don't think ALL Americans are ignorant, just most of them. And it isn't their fault either - any fascist state would like it's people stupid, dumb, docile and pliant. So the U.S. has achieved it's aim there. Just look at what the U.S. did to it's own people in New Orleans. They may as well have called that place a concentration camp for unwanted Americans.

5) The quality of advice, information and general discourse on the U.S. side is so poor that it's hardly WORTH coming out of our regional section. I've asked several questions on the 2G forums and never had a useful answer. Most of the time, anything worth reading gets bumped off by nooby comments from American people who should really know better.

I can safely say we wont be getting over ourselves any time soon, as to be honest, the UK side represents what the U.S. side should be. The best part being we don't have to put up with childish flaming and 'idiot' posts.

Let me be clear - we don't want foreign input, or need it. If the UK side was on it's own, it would be better off for it. The UK MX6 club does just dandy by itself on the seperate forum we have now made.

Like I said previously, the only reason I still come on here, is for cheap US parts, and Megasquirt. Everything else is just 'chaff'.

I dunno Jason. I think I'm on their side about "football". American football stops every 5 seconds so the lazy linebackers can catch their breath and waddle to their new line of scrimmage.

I played soccer for 13 years and I will always be a fan.

I consider number 4 to be completely false and erroneous. You sound very misinformed and uneducated about the events you are trying to talk about. Maybe you should take your own advice and learn about a country outside of your own borders.

As far as number 5 goes the difference between our U.S. "chaff" and your little hole in the earth seems to be the lack of new members in your section. The new membership on this site tends to use the general sections of the site because that is what they see first. They are the ones who come with all the noob comments. How is our advice not as good as your godlike UK mx6 knowledge? Mechanical knowledge is mechanical knowledge. A turbo is a turbo whether it is in the U.S. or the UK.

I for one would like to see pictures of the cars from the UK. I know you guys have different styles than we do in the states and I have seen some damn fine looking cars. It's just a shame that you don't want to share with everyone on the site.

B-rock has been under the bus since he started and he will be lucky as hell if the american people don't repeatedly back over him just to make sure they finished the job.

I'll bet the USA's navy would beat the [shizzle] out of Canada's navy. Oh wait...

I'll bet the USA's marines would beat the [shizzle] out of Canada's Marines. Oh wait...

On the bright side if there is ever a nuclear war Canada is the last place anyone is worried about blowing up. Have fun living with all the radiation-enlarged New York sewer rats.
Well Canada is ready to have a nuke war whenever you are America.......oh wait, we have your nukes, the irony.

End Comment
LMAO, and some states even have McDonalds delivery. ENOUGH SAID!!

Atleast American Football isn't boring.
Yeah Jason, non-american "football" is SOOO boring it is the largest sport played and viewed worldwide........Only in America would you think your better then every other country and person!

Hi Chris,

What about little ole me and BaBaKa.....

I posted up fotos of her, entered the "Car of the Month" competition and sometimes double post on both forums.

Being serious though, our two nations are so very different.

We sent our convicts to Australia and our religious right fanatics ( i.e The Pilgrim Fathers ) to the East Coast of the USA.

I feel that Australia got the far better deal.....;)

As some of you know I visit the States every year ( except this year when my friends came here due to the weak pound earlier this year ).

It's an awesome country and the people are very friendly overall.

We Brits are a friendly bunch too but we are by nature more reserved and it takes more time to get to know us.

Americans make great hosts but are not so good at being guests.

Overall you guys "Across the Pond" have a much better life than we do.

Back in the 70's and early 80's, I ran a Electrical Contracting & Retail Business with my half-brother.

I earnt a third of the salary that my cousin's husband did who was a very senior executive with the Philapdelphia Light Company ( I think that was it's name).

He had a paid for Ford Mustang in the garage and a company Caddy.

My cousin Meg had two kids, they had a big house ( 5 bedrooms, swimming pool, tennis court - the lot ).

I had a small one bed flat in Thames Ditton, a large mortgage and my car on Hire Purchase.

In those days I was struggling with a rubbish Labour Government and it's 3 day weeks, constant strikes, power cuts etc etc. Now our New Labour Government is far more to the right.

We had contracts with organisations such as the the Wimbledon All England Lawn Tennis Club but it was still a struggle to survive and today it still is with the high prices and taxes.

We get lousy State Pensions in the UK compared to many of our European partners.

If you are succesful in the USA, then you can have a better lifestyle than here in the UK but if you are not, then frankly a person is better of over here because we have a great National Health Service ( although it could be far better ) and good social housing.

The problem here is that we have allowed far too many people into our small little island down the years, so it is overcrowded which means stupidly high house prices.

We have massive youth crime now and earlier today I was chatting to a guy who runs a burger van nearby.

We both agreed that young people in Britain need far more discipline and bringing back " National Service " for both men and women would make them grow up.

Also our prison sentences are pathetic and weak.

Life means life in the USA, over here it means anything from 10 years upwards.

I would give these young offenders a choice, prison or a stint in Afghanistan and then set free.

Our prisons are soft places with TV etc, so they are going to opt for prison naturally.
