I dunno how into automechanics you guys are, but hear me out. In Japan they had a similar engine that Mazda produced (2.5L) that had an output of approximately 200HP. These high-power engines from Japan are what I believe, are called J-spec engines. I also believe that your cars have the same engine block, hence no drastic modding to engine mounts.
You can get these engines from engine importers and most of these are in California, Corksport (Oregon) has 'em as well http://www.corksport.com. The engine code is KL_ZE. I read about this on a MX-3 website, http://tor-pw1.netcom.ca/~dragon64, and they were able to switch the MX-3's 1.8L V6 to the KL_ZE engine with no probs.
The downside is that the KL_ZE is about 1700 at corksport with a computer reprogramming. Same goes for the I4 guys, at corksport they have a 170HP Capella (626/MX-6, 2.0L) engine (Code: FS_ZE), $1800.
If you are interested email the guy that runs the mx3 website and he'll tell ya if the conversion will work (V6 only). Or Corksport as I think they do conversions as well.

Check this site as well http://www.mx-3.com it has a lot of info and links to other pages talking about the conversions they did.

Expensive, but think of the power with the mods on your
current V6 or I4 on the J-spec engine. oooo-mama!

Yea, the ZE is a sweet engine. They come from Japan with ~30K miles on them and can be bought here in America. I have talked to Soko ( http://www.soko.com ) they usually have a few in stock, I emailed him about them and he said he'd sell me one for $1400 + $90 freight, that's it. It's a direct swap, everything you can put on the stock 03 you can put on the ZE. If I hadn't blown my money on my auto to 5 speed swap in my probe, I would've gotten a ZE.

i have one

I bought mine from japan direct for only $1389( plus 100 with shipping). I have had mine for over a year now andf even passed emisions without an EGR valve. It runs great and you can really feel a difference. By the way you do not need the ecu reprogramed.. it will put out the same hp at the wheels with out one.
