Check his fuel pressure regulator too. theres a lower volume of fuel when theres no load on the engine. maybe the fpr puts enough pressure to accomodate that but not a full throttle acceleration (or even less). the sputtering makes me think of inadequate pressure that is relieved ny the sputtering. well good luck!

does he have a 4 cyl? also do you have a multimeter? also now that i think of it...i dont think its the FPR. its what relieves pressure when the fuel pump pushes too much. it might be overacting tho (relieving too much pressure).
