So if you've come this far you fall into one of two categories. The first is a newbie who hasn't read the rules asking you to serach and look through the FAQs. The second is a veteran that is sick and tired of seeing a new thread about someone wanting to turbo their DX every week.

Newbies: Read this FAQ first, then this post second.

Veterans: Post your thoughts and links.

My experience is that it is usually easier and cheaper to find a GT.

yea ,yea find a gt they say.Okay I see it this way.1 = a non-turbo is a high compression motor what the big diff turbo 7.8:1 non 8.6:1. I'll share my mind later


so back to the topic besides the pistons being low c.r the is not much difference
pros:need less boost to great same power, in my case the auto motor is balanced for vibe.
cons: never look at them:muhaha:

In some parts of the country/world GTs are hard to find.

For anyone that doesnt know, Im one of the guys who ran an 8.6:1 n/a longblock in my GT. I ran a stock turbo with all GT stuff (since it was in a GT...) and it ran awesome. It's still running to this day, 30k miles on the n/a block with a stock turbo with no coolant.

When I had it, I ran 10 psi (basically disconnected wastegate, can't get any higher boost at this elevation) and an 85 shot nitrous. I used to be able to hang with my buddies 345 whp 300zx TT til like 65 :)

The guy who owns it now abuses it badly, in fact he even towed a 3/4 ton chevy truck with it on the interstate... It is still running awesome, though it burns a bit of oil.


Lower compression will indeed help avoid detonation. For the era of the 1G GT's.

Mazda was thinking ahead knowing there'd be people who put 85 octane in and drive in full boost on a 110 degree day :rolleyes:

With todays better combustion chamber designs and advanced electronics and knock control devices, it is possible to run higher compression. The head design of the F2t isnt near what new DOHC 4 valve/cyl designs offer. The slant plug and 12V chamber is more prone to detonation from what I've observed in both my F2 and my buddies KA24E (12V SOHC 2.4L) Those engines had 8:1 n/a some years! I see a correlation there, but Im no engine designer. Hell, none of us here are.

i didnt find a gt but i have already swapped the GT items to my DX. i know its alot of work and time but its worth it to me. the best way is to have a doner car, mine was a 89 PGT that needed to be put down. the body was gone and the motor need a rebuild which im in the process of doing. all the suspension i have swapped over. if i would have found a GT i would have taken it fast. o well, getting a GT to start is alot easier and u would need the time and knownledge and the tools to do it. good luck on all the other ppl doing what i am doing and i will be like the othger Gt ppl around here soon!!

i got a 92 mx6 dx and a 89 mx6 gt but the gt is an auto tranny i wanna take the gt motor and commponits (ecu,suspintion,etc.) but i dont want the auto tranny so i was thinkin i could use the dx tranny i know that that gt tranny is beefy but whats the odds and the work

I have a 1990 mx6 turbo, im having serious troubles. when i push the accelerator so the turb kicks in the engine sorta cuts out n there is a beep noise in the cabin. could it be a the turbo??? plz reply to [email protected]

I have done this, If you plan on racing the car, go with the dx, and then do the swap, it is lighter, and the swap isn't that hard. You need the GT ecu, wiring harness, Engine, tranny, shift linkage, hubs, axels, intercooler, fuel pump, coil, igniter and Downpipe. There are a few misc nuts and bolts, dont forget the the sensors on the firewall that are connected to the harness, there is a couple extra sensors on the gt, that the dx doesn't have. The holes are there to bolt them up. The only problem I have encountered in the past is the white 6 pin plug coming out of the chassis harness that plugs into the engine harness to the coil, and igniter. One of the wires on the engine side need to be jumped to 12 volts and that is it. it has been about 9 months since I did one of the swaps, but if my memmory serves my, that is all that is needed.
