Improving mileage on 98 F150

Can i get a tuner for my F150 to adjust the fuel maps and accel ?
Its 4.6 v8 is a pig on gas. Its so responsive that you just touch the gas and it jumps forward.
Trucks should have a Power/Economy switch so you save fuel when you don't need the power.

possibly adjust the cable on the throttle, but as far as the mileage.......its an F-150. they are made to be powerful and hall stuff. You might be able to get away with cleaning the intake or maybe getting a performance jet programmer but i'm not real sure how good your gonna get it. I think they run around like 16 mpg in the city and i think possibly 20 on the interstate. I forget the exact specs but i know they aren't the best. But for getting the work done and taking your 7,000 pound oak desk to the track they can do all day long.
cut out a piece of cardboard half the size of the air filter and throw it under it. half the air = half the fuel rite?

edit: 90% chance of a cel and running like piss. try it!

LOL!!!!

Best idea evar!!!
what are the specifics on your truck? 4x4? Gear ratio? I doubt a programmer would make much difference as most programmers are set up to get more power out of an engine. You might be able to get a set of highway tires with a lower rolling resistence, and maybe change out the gears to get a better gear ratio. If your truck is lifted I'd return it back to stock height. I'd also make sure the engine is in top running condition, with clean filters and a good O2 sensor. Beyond that, there's not much you can do; trucks are heavy and not too aerodynamic and it takes a lot of fuel to move them. Outside of the truck itself you can try slowing down a little. Anything over 60 mph/ 100 km/h wastes fuel.
want better mileage? Trade it in for a Taco
take the bed off, and the interior door panels. Weight reduction dude, and replace the mirrors with GS-X mirrors! Sorry ademan, had to crack one about that ;D
drive with the gate down and use cruise control but the best way to save gas is drive something with 4 cyl only and like 60 whp. my 92 corolla got 40+
actually the gate up will give better mileage. It makes a vortex so when wind travels over the cab it hits the spinning vortex that the bed has created and flows freely over the truck. If you don't believe me look up a dragster s-10. I forget what team he was but ran a stupidly quick time with no bed cover and mythbusters also researched the vortex in the bed.

but anyway why stop with just the doors off, do that, the bed, and get a fiberglass or aluminum hood ;)

Also why the hell do you need fenders....pfft to protect your fansy 4.6L......screw that, take that shit off and get some stretch wrap. Keeps it clean and gives it a show factor.

They're pretty bad on gas too, my buddy has an '06 and for anything other then short commutes, forget it.

Larken: You can re-adjust the linkage, all the neccessary adjustments should all be below the dash. Just take a look and see what you can do.
After that, but lower gearing for the rear end. It'll rev much lower in every gear. That should make a difference. Try 3:55, or 3:10. Stock its probably 3:73 or something close to that.
good luck.
What i want to do is reduce the accelerator enrichment to get better milage around the city.

What linkage are you talking about ?
Larken whats your average mileage? The tow rig I use is borrowed and I have only used it for towing. Towing an open bed trailer and the autocross car (1800lbs for the trailer and ~2600 for the car and support equipment). Its a 99 F150 extra cab with the 5.4l triton 4x4 package, so far Im getting 12.5-13mpg @65-70mph.

Throttle linkage, so its not so much "gas on" or "gas off". through adjusting the linkage, you can mudulate it so there is more control.
swap the fluids to synthetic (tranny, rear end, motor oil) this will help reduse alot of friction and in my experiance will pick up an mpg or two
