I've seen a lot of people mention bad HLAs when discussing clicking engines. Just what are they? My 89 LX has 106,000 miles on it, and it occasionally makes a loud clicking noise. If I pass a building with a flat wall, I can hear it very clearly. It seems to come and go for no reason. I'm not sure what causes the noise, but I was wondering if it could be bad HLAs, and what HLAs are.

Thanks!

a little help

HLA's are hydraulic lash adjusters and set the valves' clearance. If one were to go bad, it could cause the valve lash to be out of spec and they might "tick". Hope this helps
