Thought i would start a project thread to let you guys see what I'm up to, and for getting feedback and advice.

OK the project is a mk1 two door ford escort, this being an international forum I'm not sure how familiar people are of them.

This is my daily driver a 4door mk1 escort, it just has a 2L 5speed ford sierra in it, more info can be found here;
oldschool.co.nz • View topic - LOW'N'SLOW's 75 Mk1 Escort (. )( .)

OK so that's what an escort is for anyone who didn't know (A ford escort that is :p )

The two door i am building i would like to get between 250 and 300hp from the FE3. Two door escorts being small cars weigh less than 900kg so power to weight should be good :). The body is going to be bubble arched and im undecided on colours but will have a contrasting rs200 type pinstripping.

Day One of the build

Engine mounts scrach built, can take close up pics/measurments if anyone is interested.
second job was to mount the gearbox to the engine then modify the sump to clear the steering rack and fit under the bonnet, there is about 10mm clearance at the top and 5mm on the rack so she is a tight fit.

Mike lending a hand

Nick (AKA Mk1mad) replacing half the gearbox tunnel after i took to it with a grinder.

Gaza making himself a welder trolley

Not shown in this pic but radiator is dumied up and a new slam panel has been welded in that also acts as a fan shroud.

Munu is cutting up a 12mm flange for the extractors from the DWG Fredio posted cheers brother.

Dam from this post it looks like i do no work on this car myself

Nice...;) Looks like a fun little car, don't think we had escorts that old here in the states, the oldest one I can remember is the accordian bumper ones, like early 80s...

Nice! Those esco's were monstrous on the rally stages :) Only thing in common these escorts have to the US models is the badge, though.. Escort RS Cosworth and US-escort with GTR parts would make a nice rival pair :)

Nice build. You might consider going with the BIG Mazda rwd trans now while you're doing the work. The little one isn't going to last. Of course you can always make less power, or put a block of would under the throttle pedal. ;)

I recommend the big trans from the 929 or RX7 turbo II (better ratios). I'm on my second small transmission in 2000 miles with on clutch drop. If you make 300whp, you'll be (significantly) over 250ftlbs of torque, which is pretty much the upper limit of the small transmission. For me it was easy because it was all bolt up - but you'll fab'ing the trans brace anyway. Same work, better results. :D

He's right, but as I said in the other thread, it depends if you are going to hammer it or drive it :) Also, sticky tyres or O/S tyres to match the O/S car? :)

You almost may as well get a different box all together. Where do you stop? T56? You can't just use the rx7 box, you have to get the bell from the ute box like mine or the van like what I posted to rob. All options are quite a bit of work except the buy a b2200 box with crap ratios and upgrade the ratios later option which I took. My ratios are rubbish though, it may as well be a 3 speed lol. (2 3 4) 1 too low, 5 ~= 4.

OK definitely going to look into a different box then as i'm heavy footed and this is not going to be a daily!
Also the rear is going to have ten inch wide wheels as its going to be a bubble arch escort.

So Fredo i just did a Rx7 search on the old trademe and of these boxes ...

TradeMe.co.nz - rx7 gearbox for sale, New Zealand

... What type would i be after as there seems to be more than just one rx7 box.

So the bell housing from the box i have wouldn't work i guess?

What are the Hyundai Fe boxes like? Might be an option to pay a bit to get one of them from a wrecker if they strong enough?

Cheers in advance guys

Here ya go- the trans (gearbox) you have is on the right and the trans (gearbox) you want is on the left. The left is an actual Turbo II rx7 box, the right is the Miata/Mx5 box.

What Fred said. And- didn't somebody post here that there was a Mazda that used the big trans with good ratios bolted to an F block?

Update number two

HUGE thank you to Munu for hooking me up with this :p 12mm flange for extractors.

Fits like a glove!

Picked up a fuel rail. Its going to need a bit more modification to work.

The slam panel almost finished

The radiator overflow bottle fitted to the inner guard.

How the engine mounts been done.

Tunnel tacked up

The mean dash cover that needs new gauges and a clean up but i recon its choice as.

Munu also hooked me up with some supper cheap steel to Finnish the gearbox cross member with, and i picked up bolts after work, so may give that a shot tomorrow.

What size extractor pipes should i run, im about to order the collectors with the turbo flange already welded up, so then i will just need to make the extractors from the collector to the engine flange.

Basicly im asking what have you used fred? :p

Another thing im slightly unsure about also is the 51mm by 34mm overal on the engine flange ... they guy that im getting a a quote from said he would do them with 38mm id what that soind like to you guys?

Sorry for all the questions

Ok looking at turbo's, iv decided on going TD05 at this stage.

looking at this one here:
evo 4,5,6 tdo5 turbo and manifold for sale - TradeMe.co.nz - New Zealand

Off a 1998 evo
re built 2500km's ago

The main query i have is does it spin in the correct direction?

As i have heard that late ones spin in the wrong direction? is this a true story?... or though 98 to you guys probably seems early im oldschool and anything in the 90's is new to me.
