I am about to get a 1989 MX-6 GT....the guy said the car has transmission problems.........i dont know what kind, but still I wanted to know. What transmissions fit the car? Does it have to be specific to the GT? Are the years interchangeable? Can I take a trans from a non turbo 5-speed and bolt her up?

Thanks, and I look forward to working with you guys:)

i don't know if you can interchange with other cars, if you use one from a non turbo mx6 you'll probably watch it from your rearview mirror as it rolls down the road lol. they are not strong enough at all. As far as i know it shouldn't matter what year of trans you want to you use, someone correct me if i'm wrong.

You have to put a turbo tranny on a turbo motor, and a n/a tranny on a n/a motor. The years are interchangable from 88-92 from ford to mazda and vice versa. The tranny in our turbo cars are weak, very weak. I've had mine for about 10,000 miles off from a rebuild, with raised boost, it's still running smooth as silk.

you have to watch out for the words "transmission problems"....correct me if I'm wrong but you don't know alot about mechanical problems?...Transimissions can get VERY costly, you can save yourself some money if you do a rebuild yourself, but it isnt advisable for the beginner's mechanic. A rebuild from a shop is going to run you.......ehhhhhh? $600.. and about the same for labor, most places will try to get you for close to $1200 because they know they can, your best bet would be to find out from the guy what is wrong with the car, and not just "it has transmission problems" and try to diagnose what the problem is, most likely the guy doesnt have a clue either, otherwise he would have told you, gearing, synchros, shift gate, clutch, flywheel, etc etc.... you can probably find a tranny at a junkie somewhere, but most likely will be in the same if not worse condition than the one you are replacing. Hopefully it is still in good shape, change the shifter bushings and drain and refill the fluid with some synthetic, your clutch going bad could actually fake you into thinking it's your tranny when it isnt...you have to look out for that too.

just my $.02

that'll be $38.50 please....

I accept paypal:lol:
